Material for back of Ferguson
What would be suitable material to recover the 8" diameter breather hole in the back of my 1935 Ferguson .Stockinette in black or brown has been offered me,possibly stiffened with UHU glue and water(by a dressmaker);she says there are other types. The original was more like Hessian -to allow air through.

Re: Material for back of Ferguson
Would the stuff that craft shops sell for doing Cross Stitch work be any use for this? Just a thought. \It apparently usually comes in white or beige, but could be dyed.

Re: Material for back of Ferguson
Hello,
Georgesgiralt uses "cheese cloth" in the thread "Braun SK25". I dont know the expression "cheese cloth", but the pictures show something very appropriate for a breathing hole. Regards Georg |

Re: Material for back of Ferguson
Yes I do.
Cheese cloth is a loose woven fabric used to separate cheese from liquid milk residue when making cheese. It's either linen or cotton and comes cheap on large size. As it is pure natural product (mandatory in it's use) it can be dyed in any wanted colour. I've found it at the fabric store in my town. You may ask them. I'll try to make a close pict of the remaining fabric tonight, but I wonder if my camphone will allow it... Oh, it's also quite cheap ! |

Re: Material for back of Ferguson
Hello Georges,
something like this? http://www.holzeis.com/catalog/popup_image.php/pID/1132 That reminds me of the fabric farmers used as bags to sell potatoes or onions. (long ago) Georg |

Re: Material for back of Ferguson
Well could be.
But in mine the threads are really fine. And it is whiter too. I do not think onion bag will do. Too thick a thread ! (but it has to resist more weight) |

Re: Material for back of Ferguson
Motoring shops like Halfords sell cheesecloth for polishing. A spray with starch and an ironing should give what you are looking for.

Re: Material for back of Ferguson
Sorry, that should read muttoncloth. Not quite what you are looking for.
Try an upholsterer. They use something called scrim which is open weave cloth-almost like gauze bandage. |
