Question Sharp 'linytron' ?

Hi all. Picked up this early 80s? Sharp linytron 18" colour tv from where I work for a fiver. Seems to be working well apart from the convergence was slightly out and the volume slider was broken off.

Does anyone know anything about these sets? Were they any good back in the day?

Cheers

They most certainly were Jan. Very reliable and produced a cracking picture. No doubt the 'LINYTRON' name was pinched from Sony's popular Trinitron receivers. The Sharp were equally if not superior to the contemporary Sony of it's day. regards, John.

Indestructible sets with tubes made from Kryptonite. Early examples had simple PAL decoders, limiting the colour performance somewhat.

Hi all and thanks for the replies. Looks like I didn't buy a lemon after all

The model number is C1851H (sounds a bit like a Gec model number?) I take it the 'H' means it is designed for uk standard.

The picture is really good and it doesn't look like it had any repairs done except by me by gluing the volume slider knob back on. Now it is doing sterling service as a bedroom set. Shame there is no remote

Thanks again, Jan

We had a few of these out on rental in the 80's and they were so reliable it was just a matter of 'install and forget'. When they came back in (usually because the customer had died (!) or just fancied a change), a quick set-up and clean and they were up for sale in the shop! Bl**dy marvellous tellies!

Ahh! the 1980's. Best years for quality production. It had just about reached the best possible. That not only goes for Sharp receivers but all engineering including automotive.
I did have the service manual for the Sharp 1851H but never opened it. John.

Attached are a couple of shots from the 1977 Sharp brochure. These show the C1871 18" and C2051 20" models, both in the Linytron range.

I reckon your set may be late 70s rather than 80s Jan...

Cheers
Steve

Hi.
These were rarely seen up here and the 20 inch version is even more rare! I have only ever serviced one 18 inch and I cannot remember what for!
They are no doubt very reliable, as were Toshiba's and Mitsi's of the same era!

Pity Sharp sets that came along later on were so bad!

Hi all and thanks steve for the pictures. My set is the same as the 20" with the touch channel selectors. It has a black front though, not woodgrain. ITs the only sharp set of that size I have ever seen from that era.

Cheers, jan

Hi
Is that the set with the vertical or horizontal chassis? I wasn't keen on the vertical one - I had a few power supplies die unpleasantly on those - also a couple of tubes, oddly enough. The horizontal chassis was great - I think I only had a couple of focus controls die on those and the odd customer control.
Then in the Nineties came the horrendous CS chassis!

Hi. It has the vertical chassis with what looks like a massive black tripler on it. Hope that helps.

Cheers, jan

Hi
Yes - the main problem was getting the frame hold control knob through the back! If it's working not much to do - the odd capacitor will be drying out by now but I wouldn't worry too much. I think you might have to live with the convergence. As for the control you could try repairing it or modifying one to fit. Let us know the value and I'm sure one of us will have one lying around.

Hi.

I did have a problem getting the control through the back. It kept pushing the pot back and falling off!!

The convergence is now perfect and I managed to glue the volume slider back into place (I found all the bits on the floor nearby where it got chucked )

Now it has an excellent picture and was in the bedroom until I picked the Granada set up. So now I need to convince HWMBO if I can have it in the kitchen

Thanks again.
