Excellent that, it's one of the "Lost Steptoes" which was discovered by the appreciation society.

I taped it years ago when first shown and it's included in the boxed set of DVDs.

I noticed a few changes in sound quality, like it had been recorded on two different machines. Is it possible this episode had been spliced together from separate recordings?

Don't remember whether or not the sound quality changes as I've not run it for a year or so.

Though it could well be spliced together. Think there were quite a few missing episodes that came to light.

This one delighted me being 40 plus years in the trade.

Very nostalgic that. Changing channels and 21" CRTs were a bit after my time, we only had BBC and most sets were 9 or 12", the soldering plugged into the light was about right though.

The sound problem could have been due to a damaged tape, that loss of top is fairly typical of creases in it preventing it lying flat on the head.

I love this episode and the dodgy quality here and there helps a little by the imagining of this being broadcast rather than from a DVD via a wire.

This episode on DVD is what I used to run through the Marconi 702 last year for the benefit of those viewing - mostly BVWS members!
I can't think of a more appropriate episode, however my personal favourite is the (sadly colour) 'Divided We Stand' from 1972 where they split the house up into two because they are sick of each other.

Radiolot, I remember that episode - even the TV is cut in half by the wall.

The old geezer had the side with the controls on it (if memory serves)

I have seen that episode! The TV cabinet is just an empty shell. You can see straight through the vents in the back cover

Thanks for the link Sean.

Re the one with the wall down the middle. My Dad & I laughed more at the hollow telly than the rest of the programme.

Correct, the wall did indeed split the set in half.

The best ever scripted line in Steptoe is also in there - when Harold complains that he can't watch his TV programme he wants, he reminds his old man that he "..has the power of contract on my side".
To which daddy comes back, complete with grin, "I have the knobs my side."

Utter class.

Yes, empty cabinet alright. They could have at least covered up the back panel holes or put a low wattage lamp inside during that bit.
But then surely the best things are done on the cheap - look how well KB radios did!

Anyone else do a value add-up of all the props in the background? That 444 Phil' People's set kept appearing in the early 70s series by the bear in the lounge.
