Default What is this?

Exactly as the title says. 'What is This?'

Strictly speaking this should have gone under another heading but this would have given the game away far too quickly. John.

Intruder alarm or hidden camera, to be placed among books on a bookshelf?

I recall Heathkit doing one many years ago.

Could be a VHS cassette case, for collectors of old episodes of 'Corra' who want nonetheless to project an air of erudition from their living room shelves...

Inexpensive Far Eastern tape recorder? I remember one that looked rather like this, branded "Parrot" inside and on the spine.

I believe the title on the spine of the book was "The Informer".

When I was young (around 10) I had a small reel to reel tape recorder in a faux book just like that ... wish I still had it ... I hope that's what it is as I'd like to see if it is as I remember.

Yes that’s the exact one I remember removing the motor

What date would it be?

Microporofessor is thicker than that, and has the name on the spine. I have one on the shelf.

In typical vintage-Japanese fashion, it's exactly like the Parrot too About 1965?

Now I think of it, I had a fairly similar version in a red binding as well, a Binatone Book-Corder. They may both have been sold a few years ago during my last attempt to gain some space to live in.

The model number is TSK-4000. The motor drives the two tape tables direct. No capstan of course. The microphone acts as loudspeaker in playback. It works quite well on speech.

Don't leave it on your bookshelf if it says 'Good Morning, Mr. Phelps'.
It's about to catch fire!

Hmm, I can't find any photographs of the Parrot, which I think may mean it's still on the premises. Binatone's model, which isn't, turns out to be less different from the Vantone than I had imagined, notwithstanding its landscape rather than portrait orientation.
