I agree a DC coupled LTP isn't optimum, the ECC85 isn't the best choice either. The whole amp is a bit weird, why not just make a Mullard 5-20 or Williamson clone? If you get rid of the DC coupling and pop a 6SN7 in place of the 6SL7 I think you'll see a big improvement. Driving it with a front end of the Leak is a good idea as a start.

Subbing a 6SN7 in place of the 6SL7 with the circuit as is won't work, different biasing.

I'd love to get my hands on this amp for a hour or two,hope you get it working, tother Andy.
