You can't get more vintage computing than this. Forget Allan Turin- this lady was into computing long before he was born.

There are a number of examples of systems which well predate their practical application. Look at Isaac Newton who gave us calculus, well before the practical application of inertial navigation became practical.

Calculus had plenty of uses before inertial navigation added yet another one.
