Black Country Living Museum plans a 1959 radio & TV shop
The Black Country Living Museum in Dudley is planning to recreate Stanton's:
http://www.bclm.co.uk/news/do-you-re...m#.WnzVSSXFK01 In their original shop, which is to be recreated and set in 1959, Stanton's sold not only records, sheet music and musical instruments but was also a radio and TV shop with Bush and HMV dealerships. This shop is part of a major new development project called "Forging Ahead" which is described on the Museum's website. The project is still in its early stages, but the Curators are already keen to start acquiring radios, TV sets, record players, tape recorders and musical instruments from the late 1950s to stock the showroom. A list of specific makes and models that they are seeking has been drawn up. 1959 would have seen transistor radios, VHF/FM sets and 405-line TVs alongside valved portable receivers and displays of HT and LT batteries, and provides an exciting opportunity to put together an interesting working display. In the fullness of time, the Museum is also likely to require additional skilled volunteers to repair and restore the exhibits. It has taken Len and I over seven years to restore the fifty or so pre-war radio sets in the Museum's existing 1939 wireless shop, Griptons, and we aren't getting any younger...! Phil

Thanks for the info Phil. I didn't know about this place. It looks like a fantastic place to spend a day, if indeed a day is enough! It is definitely on my places to visit this year.

Nice to know they will have another radio shop soon. I went there last year but was a bit disappointed as the trolley buses were not running and the radio shop was un-manned.
They were the two things I wanted to see! If I lived near I would certainly help out but London is too distant. John |

Echoing John(Radtechman)'s comments, I hope to go there later this year, having visited the BCLM a couple of times before, but not for several years.

The de-manning of Griptons is a sore point. It is a fantastic facility that ought to be open all the time. If more people complained, perhaps something might change! If you come on a Tuesday or Thursday, one of the radio workshop volunteers is usually present and we can show you round.

I remember seeing a radio shop on my last visit maybe two or three years ago, but sadly it was shut at the time. I did wonder whether the specimens in the shop window were working sets or props. Its interesting to hear about this new development.

I can assure you that every set in the showroom and workshop has been restored, and everything works!

That news brings back hapoy memories, I remember Stantons at the bottom of Dudley High Street, as a teenager I used to get my records there and remember the shop well, so glad to see that in some part it's to be restored as a museum exhibit.

I remember Stantons too, but only in its 'new' premises in the 1960s when I used to buy gramophone needles from them! I was a vintage enthusiast at an early age...
