Another old electric Kettle rescued.
Picked this up in a charity shop today for a few pounds .
I've not a clue about old kettles and there are no markings anywhere to give me a clue as to make etc. I seem to remember a few old threads about electric copper kettles so I took the plunge and bought it. Couple of pictures. |

Re: Another old electric Kettle rescued.
Unusual style, might it be continental, eg French?

Re: Another old electric Kettle rescued.
I would say it is later than it's appearance suggests but the mains connector looks 1950's. Anything written on the bottom? J.

Re: Another old electric Kettle rescued.
There is nothing written on the bottom unfortunately and the legs are also metal, but looking inside the kettle at the reveals that the welding that hold the spout onto the main body is very rough, so I don't know if that points to anything.

Re: Another old electric Kettle rescued.
Bit surprising they sold something like that unless just for ornamental purposes- I guess it came without its mains lead?
Interesting to see what the element resistance is- around 55R would suggest 1kW which would be likely if it's as old as it s appearance would suggest. I'd be inclined to megger the element to body and be sure of a good earth connection before trying to boil any water with it!

Re: Another old electric Kettle rescued.
Was for ornamental collectable purposes only yes.
Im not sure I would want to fire it up in any case, and no it came without any leads or plugs. Looking at the element it appears to be quite thin too. |

Re: Another old electric Kettle rescued.
Saw an ancient version once - it was like a milk jug and inside were two ceramic spacers between which a coil of wire hung between. Two bolts went through the ceramic spacers and the side of the jug where they were connected to a mains lead I think with some sort of socket, but it was a long time ago. I thought it was incredibly dangerous and wondered if it was homebrew because I could not visualise even NZ of the 30's allowing such an arrangement.

Re: Another old electric Kettle rescued.
They still use bare coils of wire to heat water however tape bombs appear to be a mandatory fitment on such appliances.

Re: Another old electric Kettle rescued.
The lead out wires are shorter than the wall bracket as they come right out of the manufacturers packaging producing a massive incentive to prime a tape bomb connection.
They are crazy. |
