Default Sony ICF-SW100 antenna question

Many years ago I had one of these tiny radios, and loved it. I foolishly sold it a while back.
At Retrotech last Sunday I succumbed and bought another, in lovely condition, and working. However, its antenna has got a bit corroded at the base and the lower section is (I think) mis-behaving. (luckily there is no battery corrosion inside, just some strange corrosion round the hidden bit of the telescopic antenna). The small bottom section is (from memory) slightly pull-out, so the antenna can rotate and come out a bit to poke up past the case.
Sadly there is only a little round-and round movement between the two bits of the small bottom section, and no in-and-out movement.

Can anyone who has one of these sets confirm if the bottom section is meant to pull out, and if so, is it spring loaded or just friction, and by how much. (folded and deployed photos would be wonderful).
I've cleaned off all the surface pitting corrosion with vinegar, and applied some plus-gas to ease it.

Before I apply some serious longitudinal force it would be nice to know what is meant to happen!
many thanks
Jeremy

Jeremy, the aerial is normally folded (pic1) but pulls out (pic2) just enough so that when swivelled by 90 degrees (pic3) it clears the back of the case.

It does get quite stuff after a long period, the best way to loosen it is to take it out by opening the case - the aerial is attached by a single screw - and then clamping the lug at the bottom in a vice and applying wd40 / similar and moving and rotating it until it's a little easier to move. The reason it's best to take the aerial out is that the screw is tapped into the plastic case and won't withstand much turning/pulling. Good luck!

Keith

Thanks Keith. That confirms that the antenna bottom section is well stuck and needs some easing.

Hi Jeremy,

As Keith has said, remove the aerial before messing with it so that you don't damage the cabinet. If you don't have any luck freeing it, then I may have a spare one, but would need to double check.

It has already been removed to make repairs. So far the plus gas and twisting just rotate the stem - no sign of movement in and out yet.

Success! Armed with Keith’s photos I lubricated and worked the lower section. No luck initially, but I then tried heating the tube with a small gas torch, and after a few tries the tubes were sliding again. I suspect that a very small amount of battery corrosion got inside. In any case there was black gunk coming out of the gap. Everything works fine now although the antenna does not want to stay upright very much! I’ll work on that. Maybe try to reduce the lubrication a bit.
All functions work on the radio so I’ll be getting some good use out of it this summer.
Thanks all for your very helpful advice.

That's good you got it sorted out. They are great little radios, surprisingly sensitive.
