Sets that I have dismantled over 55+ years
I've been looking through my small box of internal labels that I have kept from sets that I have dismantled over the past 55+ years and I thought I'd share some of them.
Some were quite ornate and therefore more costly to produce. Pye were particularly keen on this. However, all manufacturers had resorted to cheap and simple paper or adhesive tape based labels by the late 60s, as one of many cost-cutting measures adopted in order to keep prices down. Sadly, many became unstuck and were subsequently lost. I now wish I'd kept some of these sets - if only I had "infinite" storage space! In particular, the Pye V770D, as early dual standard and convertible sets are my main interest. |

Goodness, all I’ve got of the sets I dismantled are memories.

Re: Sets that I have dismantled over 55+ years
I should add that I have kept rather more than these labels: tuners, PCBs, LOPTs, scan coils, knobs, speakers .... it would probably take up less space just to keep the whole set!
Here's one that wouldn't fit into the box: Last edited by dazzlevision; 26th May 2023 at 4:20 pm. |

Re: Sets that I have dismantled over 55+ years
Absolutely brilliant!
Also part of my life history there, even though I moved out of domestic servicing & into broadcast engineering. Some of the organisations that I worked for did use some domestic TV receivers, where there was for instance, distribution of signals to offices. I have a few labels, but nothing like that! Very well worth preserving. David. |

Two Invicta 7070U labels! I still have my set given to me when I was 11 in 1972. I only ever saw one other a few years later. I do wonder if my set is the only one left!

Re: Sets that I have dismantled over 55+ years
Here are a few more items from my collection:
The Decca label was stuck to the CRT of sets on their Bridgnorth factory production line. The sets were branded HMV, for the Australian market - circa 19767. The Murphy label was also stuck on the CRTs on the V800 series TVs, which were the first to be produced after the Rank takeover (1963-64 models) and were still assembled at Welwyn Garden City, using Bush innards from their Plymouth factory. This one survived as it was stuck onto the side of the cabinet in the original buyers home! The small brown envelope was supplied with many Thorn group branded sets and could contain fuses, wander plugs, etc. |

Some more labels from the Bush/RBM stable, where you can see the effects of money saving over time (from metal, to plastic, to paper).

Re: Sets that I have dismantled over 55+ years
Finally, some more labels, including the infamous GEC/Sobell group "shiny" ones that become unstuck fairly quickly from new.
Not the valve positions label is from a GEC BT448, which was one of the first in the model range after GEC and Sobell (Radio & Allied Industries) merged. Still made in Coventry, with a slightly different circuit and still using mainly Mazda valves (probably because of a supply contract that GEC had with Mazda, who had been supplying GEC with Mazda valves but branded GEC and with GEC valve type nomenclature). The black plastic tape "CT205" model/serial number label is from the Pye CT205 hybrid colour TV (697 chassis!). |

Re: Sets that I have dismantled over 55+ years
I still have the shed my parents bought me in 1976 it served for many years as my workshop and survived two house moves. There are a few remnants of it's previous life, one being this trim from a RBM A640 varicap that I must have scrapped...

Re: Sets that I have dismantled over 55+ years
Noticed a label from a Decca DR41. It was quite a rare set. Thorn 800 series convertible chassis. Stop gap set until Decca got around to making their own dual-standard models such as the DR31.

Quote:
It was retired around 1968, after I enquired from the Decca service department the cost of a UHF/625 conversion kit - 15 guineas - a lot of money then. I replaced it with a (£5) Ferguson 3618 19" dual standard Thorn 850, that allowed us the watch BBC2 for the first time. I managed to pick up another Decca DR41 at a Chas Miller auction, several years ago. |

Re: Sets that I have dismantled over 55+ years
What an interesting collection.
My slow progress project/restoration is my old RBM A640 TV that I rescued from my late fathers house. Sadly it s missing the 640 chassis label as well as a few other things.
