CRT rear projection TV's. Liquid used?
What was the liquid used in the colour sets in the 90's Was inside the crt assembly. I seem to remember whenever they leaked they quickly rotted the boards underneath, writing off the set. We did the Samsung and LG and later the Toshiba ranges, in fact I became a whizz kid (firms idea) on them, but I can't think what the liquid was called. Ta anyone, Tony Walker

Wasn't it some sort of glycerol?

I'm pretty sure it was indeed some kind of glycerine or glycerol. Different television brands might have used slightly different formulations that may have had different trade names.

Re: CRT rear projection TV's
Hi,
A passed friend who had a TV shop in the 70s, 80s & 90s told me, that this fluid is very dangerous. Handling requires safety actions! When he ordered this fluid, it was brought by a special service company. Regards, German Dalek

Re: CRT rear projection TV's
It's glycol. Essentially, it's antifreeze.
Horrible stuff, but no more dangerous than many things. Done battle with it many times . . . Some more information here: http://www.curtpalme.com/Bleeding_CRT_Tubes2.shtm Once had some brand new Sony tubes go 'bang' in a big way in front of our customer (Japanese military). Had some fun pointing out the 'Sony' logo to them . . . Lots of talk in Japanese, so I had no idea what they were saying! Best regards, Paul M |

Yes, I seem to remember having to be careful with it, disposing of the tubes was done by a company, but there was quite a lot of them. Few went low emission, the problems were inter-electrode shorts or cracked glass due to EHT flashover, happy days.
