The oldest working Television in the UK
Congratulations to our very own Jeffrey Borinsky aka PPP penguin who has won the competition to find the oldest working television in the UK.
Jeffrey and the TV a Marconiphone 702 is featured in the Daily Mail today as the winner of the competition. A fantastic achievement. |

Re: The oldest working Television in the UK
Iain Baird was on the Today programme this morning talking about it. He's on his way to my place now and I'm going to be getting a fair number of press people round later on. The possible live interview with BBC Breakfast never materialised so you're all spared the sight of seeing me on TV. I'll probably be appearing on BBC Online, interviewed by Rory Cellan-Jones.
The press release was done last week and was embargoed until midnight tonight. Unfortunately my local paper inadvertantly spilled the beans yesterday and I got a flurry of calls. Today was going to interview Iain Baird tomorrow but they picked up the interest and didn't want to be late with the news. A few photos from the session with Iain Baird a couple of weeks ago. PS: Just looked at the Daily Mail article online and I can assure you all that my set will not be moving to the national collection. It's staying right here with me in Finchley. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...-set-1936.html Last edited by ppppenguin; 20th Jul 2009 at 8:34 am. |

Re: The oldest working Television in the UK
Ah... so the example discussed on Radio 4 was yours. I had wondered whether it was the one (with a very fine original cabinet) stored at Bradford.
Congratulations. Steve

Re: The oldest working Television in the UK
What was the prize then? Presumably a freeview box with RF output? Did you manage to screw an Aurora out of them too?
It will be interesting to see if someone comes up with an older set in response to the Daily Mail article.

Well done! Your set looks superb. Has the cabinet been restored?
Is that a standards switch I see in the photos? ..and does it work? Peter Last edited by peter_scott; 20th Jul 2009 at 11:56 am. |

Congratulations Jeff! A beautiful set indeed.
I was able to find the Iain Baird interview on the Today program website. It starts at about 1:46:10 into the show and runs for about three minutes. Darryl |

Congratulations Jeffrey. A remarkable set still in a home location and being used. Nice pictures too, of the set and the owner.
Dilys says to tell you that she abandoned her lifelong socialist principles and bought the Daily Mail. See you soon old boy. Cheers, Steve P & Dilys.

Re: The oldest working Television in the UK
Well, the press have gone and peace has broken out. The 702 behaved itself and so did I. The prize is a decent one - more later when I actually get it.
The standards switch has nothing connected to it. It was there when I bought the set. Unfortunately I don't know any of the set's history. The electronic restoration is unsympathetic and I will work to improve it. Will definitely be on BBC Online. May get a very short piece on BBC 6'oclock news. One mystery I'd like to resolve. Due to confidentiality, the Digital UK people can't tell me who else entered but apparently there were 5 or 6 prewar sets. I know 2 forum members, one in Newcastle, one in Devon, had entered but is anyone else prepared to own up? In fact when I was told I could win, I tried to palm it off on a couple of others. They had the good sense to pass the hand grenade back to me where it stayed until the music stopped Another picture attached, taken this morning. |

Re: The oldest working Television in the UK
Congratulations Jeffrey!. I think I remembered it mentioned on Today just after 6am, and also saw it in the Telegraph. Both indicate that you have 'converted it to digital' with a digibox, wonder how you interfaced that, presumably with one of the standards converters?

Re: The oldest working Television in the UK
Yes, it made the 6 this evening, though the report was short and a bit patronising, hardly surprising given the tabloid nature of that bulletin. There wasn't the slightest mention of how it was able to display pictures. Presumably there will now be lots of 'retro' idiots buying 405 TVs and wondering why they don't work.
Congratulations anyway. Paul |
