Re: Defiant Model 50 (R209)
The valves are almost certainly O.K., but other components may be faulty. Valves rarely 'blow'

This is going to be a learning curve and a half.

Re: Defiant Model 50 (R209)
Don't worry, we all did it. Perhaps as part of an apprenticeship, or other formal training, but many others were self taught. The trick is to break it down into manageable stages. You changed the plug fuse. Does the turntable revolve if you turn the right hand knob on the deck (if it's stiff don't force it) and do the valves light up?

Watched that you tube video again the guy making it made it look very easy, too easy. He was talking about parts of the thing I had no clue about

Re: Defiant Model 50 (R209)
Try the tests in post #23. They don't need any test gear. You can prove the plug fuse (which should be 3A) is OK by trying it in the plug of another appliance rated at less than 3A (about 700 Watts).

Re: Defiant Model 50 (R209)
I bought new fuses yesterday so shoved a fresh 3A fuse in it.

I’m unsure whether or not to go ahead with this...looks rather complicated

Re: Defiant Model 50 (R209)
Complicated things are made up of lots of simple things.
Try the tests in post #23. The problem could be something as simple as dirty contacts on the mains switch.

If you're using the default forum settings of 25 posts per page it'll be on page 1 of this very thread.

Re: Defiant Model 50 (R209)
Valves don’t light up. Turntable only turns manually by hand. Cleaned the switch with cleaner. Made no difference.

Re: Defiant Model 50 (R209)
Can we have a clear picture of the wiring on the OFF/ON switch please.

Re: Defiant Model 50 (R209)
If you're going to make progress with this you'll need a test meter, unless you already have one.
A whole host of tests can be done without having the player connected to the mains, so there's no danger involved. You'll find some recommendations as to suitable meters in this thread:- https://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/...d.php?t=143114 This link may also be of interest:- http://www.markhennessy.co.uk/budget_multimeters/

Re: Defiant Model 50 (R209)
That's good.
You can see the incoming mains supply connected to the tags on the right. With the switch in the ON position these tags should be connected to the tags on the left. Wires from the tags on the left go off to the turntable motor and the mains transformer primary winding. If you had a meter you'd be able to test for continuity between the two sets of tags and prove whether the switch is any good. I can't see anywhere where you can squirt contact cleaner directly into the switch. However a switch with dirty contacts or mechanical problems will often respond to being operated many times with the player connected to the mains.

Re: Defiant Model 50 (R209)
Well I’ll try and get a metre ASAP mate and a neon screwdriver too and download that pdf. There’s a couple of you tube vids I saw. Including one with 10 singles stacked so there’s an incentive to get it running and get the 45s on.

Re: Defiant Model 50 (R209)
You don't need both, it was an either/or suggestion. The meter will be fine.
