Orkney Wireless Museum
I was on holiday in Shetland and Orkney recently and had the pleasure of a visit to the Orkney Wireless Museum in Kirkwall.
It's quite small but there's plenty to see and read. Well worth a visit if you're up there. http://www.orkneywirelessmuseum.org.uk/ John

Re: Orkney Wireless Museum
What a little gem, I love small museums and endeavour to get to one each weekend. Today I went to Thame museum http://www.thamemuseum.org/, I have been there before, they have a rolling special exhibition (changed every few months) this time it was about lace, with live demonstrations (i.e. ladies doing and explaining it) makes SMT* work look easy!

Re: Orkney Wireless Museum
Looks really interesting, I convinced we don't have nearly enough radio museums in the UK especially in view at how important radio has been.

Re: Orkney Wireless Museum
I've enjoyed visiting the Orkney museum a couple of times in recent years. It's got some items of real interest, not least the jukebox that used to entertain customers in the local coffee bar.
When I last visited a couple of years ago, I realised a problem. The volunteers are very helpful and enthusiastic, but they struggle with the all too common problem that, ever since the death of the museum founder, there's no-one among their number with the technical knowledge to keep the exhibits maintained and explained to those visitors with a technical interest. I wonder how we might help in this and other museums. Martin

Re: Orkney Wireless Museum
I really enjoyed browsing the museum last year as a side event to the nearby Ness digs. Unfortunately the only photo I took has poor definition, but the 250W plate structure, and baseless format stood out for this Cossor VT31.

Re: Orkney Wireless Museum
I've been to Orkney a number of times since the early 1990s - mainly because there is so much interesting archaeology around up there, but I usually find time to fit in a visit to the OWM as well - nice little museum.
The generic museum in the other main mainland town, Stromness, is a brilliant example of an unmodified local natural history museum - go and see it before they decide to 'update' it, as they inevitably will at some point. |

Re: Orkney Wireless Museum
The gentleman in the second picture in the first post was one of the volunteers and quite knowledgeable about the exhibits and on entry I was loaned a booklet which explained a lot of what was being exhibited.
If anything, a bit too much to read in the time available. In the same picture, you can see a 'space age' television hanging from the ceiling! The jukebox was very interesting. It was apparently installed in the early 1950's and was a big hit with the locals. So much so that one of the fishing boats used to give it's position as a range and bearing from the jukebox! Everyone knew where it was! John

Re: Orkney Wireless Museum
I've dug out a couple more pictures from my last visit to the Orkney museum. Here are the Pomona Cafe jukebox and the military radio display, including an R1155 & T1154.

Re: Orkney Wireless Museum
....and here's a picture of the little building itself which is rather charmingly distinctive.
The website is at http://www.orkneywirelessmuseum.org.uk/ . Martin

Re: Orkney Wireless Museum
Although it's small you could spend hours in there. There is so much to read and look at.

Re: Orkney Wireless Museum
I seem to remember hearing that it was formerly / originally a record shop, although it was already a wireless museum by the early 1990s when I first went there.

Re: Orkney Wireless Museum
According to the 'Visit Orkney' website, it used to house the former radio dealership of John T Miller. It may well also have sold records.
