Re: Talking Pictures TV - Aspect Ratios
IMHO Gideon's Way, Edgar Wallace and Family at War are a delight to watch in prime time away from those miserable, dreadful soaps and tacky documentaries that populate that time of the evening.

Re: Talking Pictures TV - Aspect Ratios
Talking pictures is about the only channel I watch (Freeview 81). Excellent material and very good quality given the age of some of the films.
I leave my Panasonic Viera set on auto ratio and it is fine. Never get any black borders but just occasionally I will get a very brief flicker as the set makes its mind up what ratio is being used. This is usually as the programme adverts kick in or out. |

Re: Talking Pictures TV - Aspect Ratios
For Edgar Wallace Mysteries I think they use the cinema prints with the original aspect ratio rather than the television 4:3 prints

They showed the PG certificate thing the other week, then an original film censors board certificate came up that said "U" certificate. How times have changed! Offcom told them off not so long back for the non PC language in some old films and shows. So I suppose they have to put the warning notice on. It's like the notice other channels put on for the ghost hunter shows. "Entertainment Only" When everyone knows they are trying to prove ghosts are real! |

Re: Talking Pictures TV - Aspect Ratios
I watched "A Taste of Honey" earlier on.
I noticed this on a visit to the Manchester Museum of Transport a couple of weeks ago, so I was looking out for the bus scenes. As for outdated attitudes to race, sexuality, etc, didn't someone once say "Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it"? You couldn't ask for a more retrospective platform than TTTV, and I think it's a good place for such material. But to get back on topic, TTTV showed "A Taste of Honey" slightly pillarboxed, and leaves me with the impression that they were honoring the original 1.66:1 rather than zooming it up slightly to 16:9

Re: Talking Pictures TV - Aspect Ratios
I don't think the auto setting works on some pillarboxed aspects. They have to squeeze the image of a 4.3 picture to stretch it out, they do put letterbox on 2.35, but it is still squeezed. When a squeezed image is detected by the TV, it jumps to full screen. I noticed this with ITV3 too, when certain ITV dramas were not in full widescreen, when made in the 90's, but would be wider than a standard TV. They don't jump to full screen, which would still leave an edge down the sides, on a modern TV. Channel Four used a system that had pillar boxed aspect, that switched to full 16.9 on a wide TV. But that was when we had analogue TV. I think it was something to do with the Pal Plus system.
