Default R.I.P. Florian Schneider (Kraftwerk)

Sad to hear of the passing of Florian Schneider, one of the founders of electronic music pioneers 'Kraftwerk'.

The group famously built a lot of their own equipment so they weren't only musicians, they were technicians / electronics enthusiasts as well.

Interestingly, it seems there first TV appearance was not something like Top of the Pops, but Tomorrows World.

The name of the group is a bit misleading because it sounds like it's something to do with crochet or needlework, but in fact 'Kraftwerk' in German means 'Power Station', which makes a lot more sense.

The recording studio near here would have been appropriate for them... "Substation"

It's a converted modern church at the gates of Rosyth dockyard... the submarine refurb base as was.

If you want to see Kraftwerk in full flight, but not one of their better known numbers....

Contains plenty of Morse! I think Florian is the one on the left.

Very minimalist gig!

I remember an extract from this being used on Sounds of the 70s.

I got the impression Kraftwerk made a lot of their early instruments because there was nothing on the market that could do what they wanted, at least at a price they could afford.

I don't suppose Mme. Curie gets many other lyrical name-checks, either- though possibly someone like OMD may have done so!

A band who were less appreciated in the mainstream than deserved to be, but a very eclectic selection of musicians were unashamed to credit their considerable influence on them.

RIP Florian.

Oh yes, they are considered cool by all sorts of people who you might not expect would feel that way.

Compare this, Kraftwerk's original (English) version of 'The Model'

With this cover by German industrial rockers 'Rammstein'...

It was strikingly memorable hearing Autobahn on my valve radio in my teens - had to wait to the evening to pick up 2JJ - a Sydney station, from Ballarat which is quite some distance - the most progressive youth radio station in Australia at that time who played the latest releases. Not a time when I could purchase any kind of record, or when any local 'rock' station would have played that new release.

Missed seeing Kraftwerk play in Liverpool not too long ago but did get to see Wolfgang Flur a few months ago.

I was fortunate to see Kraftwerk play live at the "Tribal Gathering" festival in 1997. The show was very much on the same lines as in David's link above, quite unlike anything else even in the dance/rave/techno music world at the time. It was memorable in particular for the encore, in which the four human musicians were replaced by actual, working robots!

I also remember it was the first time I'd seen an internet address (www.kraftwerk.com) embroidered on a t-shirt. At the time, the internet was far from mainstream, so making a website known in such a way seemed incredibly radical and far-sighted. It was.

Talking of Autobahn, I was listening to this yesterday (on Tidal) - the full 22 minute version. Given that this was recorded in 1974 it is an amazing thing. I haven't listened to in for decades, but musically it is minimalism. It develops slowly, morphing from one musical theme to another in much the same way as Glass's classical pieces.

I'd quite forgotten how before their time they were.

A good few years ago now, BBC 6 Music broadcast an overview of the "Krautrock" scene (as it was originally somewhat dismissively monikered by a parochial British music press) with particular reference to Kraftwerk, I see that it is available again- at least for a short time- as it was re-broadcast the other day as a tribute to FS.

Minimalist music was invented in the USA in the early 1960s by Terry Riley and his cohorts. Its first manifestation on LP was Riley's "In C" (written in 1964, recorded in 1968) so Kraftwerk weren't really ahead of their time. There is a 40 minute version of Autobahn on YouTube but 3.5 minutes is enough for me.

Ho! I have the first original German release LP that they made - and emplazon across the front is a label advising "Autobahn Vas Eine Monster - Here She Ist Mit 7 Udders!" !! Their exclamations followed by mine! (I wonder who was their importers translator eh?).

But talking about the BBC's reportage ..... what about the 'Radiophonic Orchestra' eh? (And of course the classic theme for Dr Who .......)

Anybody remember the brief but affectionate Kraftwerk parody in an episode of Father Ted? https://youtube.com/watch?v=bIX5JgOCSoY

Bill Bailey did a rather good Kraftwerk parody as well.

I'd not seen that Father Ted one before and I'm still laughing. Thanks, Paul.
