Default Grundig Party Boy 500 Poor FM.

Hi, i have just been given this radio from a forum member. It works perfect on AM but very poor reception on FM. I have cleaned the wavechange switches, but no better.

Hi Malc,

This looks like a nice little radio, hope you can sort the FM problem

I suppose this will be one of those sit down for a couple of hours with the door shut and a cup of coffee jobs

Good luck,

The service sheet is up top there. Check that the aerial is connected There are 2 coils and a cap that connect the aerial to the set. Check these.

Cheers,

Steve P.

FM IF alignment? Any sign of disturbed cores in the 10.7Mhz path?

I have one too and can confirm that the FM is really good when they are working properly. So it is definitely faulty and not poor design. They were released in about 1974 and we had a few at the boarding school I went to as a teenager which is why I was keen to get another one.

I can't help with any definitive suggestions for the fault though. Check the aerial is connected OK (it uses a metal bracket that is soldered to the PCB), check for signs of the alignment being disturbed, and check for cracks in the circuit board in particular near the mountings and aerial. Then cast a suspicious eye over any electrolytics that are only used for FM.
