Default Custom TV

Hi,

I have a tiny 5" black and white CRT TV (with AM/FM radio)

It's the generic type, with many different brand names but I was just thinking about it, and how I don't exactly love the look of it.

I had the idea of making a custom 1970s styled casing for it, I was just wondering, how hard would it be to re-case the electronics inside. I'd still be using the same speaker, CRT and PCB, so I shouldn't imagine it'd be too hard.

I'm not too interested in the radio part, so if need be it can go if the radio and TV doesn't share any circuitry.

I can easily make the casing out of wood.

It's just an idea and nothing too serious, but if it's easy enough, I will probably end up doing it.

Thanks

Provided the crt is properly supported the world is your oyster as far as casing it is concerned!

I’ll be using everything that’s inside the original plastic casing, so i will need to make some supports for it, but that should be fairly simple.

I’m even more keen on the idea now!

Does anyone have any circuit diagrams/schematics for this set? I believe they’re refered to as “5.5” black and white TV with AM and FM radio”

I’ve seen a service manual only for these.

Thanks

I reverse-engineered the Nikkai version of this set (sold by Maplin some years ago). The circuits are hand-drawn (I don't do CAD) but if you want them PM me with your e-mail address.

Do you mean that you know where to get the service manual? I've never seen any official technical information on these little TVs.

I would be interested in a copy of your drawings. I have 2 of these 5.5" sets in a box somewhere, both have faults.

I will PM you an email address.

The Steepletone BTV510 had an AV input, not all 5" sets had.

Using one IC for so many functions I tend to see these sets as not really
serviceable.

Here's the circuit ;

I posted the circuit of a similar TV in this thread. it also includes some information from an article from Television.

https://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/...527#post156527

The circuit is very similar to the Steepletone.

The Nikkai one has 3 ICs on the TV PCB (video IF; Sound IF and Audio Amplifier; Vertical Deflection) and another on the radio PCB (combined AM and FM radio receiver thing). The horizontal deflection is all discrete transistors. I did manage to find data sheets on all the ICs on-line

It has audio and video input phono sockets too.

Hi,

I’d love one please! I’ll PM you my e-mail adress after this

I found one somewhere, I cant find it right now, but when i switch my PC on i’ll find it in my downloads and send it to you, if you’d like.

Thanks

Here's the circuit ;
The version I have doesnt have AV, just an External 3.5mm aerial. (I use a coaxial adaptor, simplifies things much more)

They do look quite small and fiddly. but mine seems to be fine, with some mains ripple, which is being sorted with a new PSU.

Thanks

Thanks for the circuit shematics/diagram!

I’ll definitely need it as im sure others will too!

Thanks

Does that mean that the radio PCB is needed for the TV to work?
Just want to clear things up before I customise it, and possibly ruin it as I dont exactly want to keep the radio, unless it’s needed.

Thanks

If it is a single PCB for radio and TV just leave the switch set to TV and do not bother to fit an external switch.

Good idea! I know that there are two PCBs, one is definitely for the TV alone, but by sounds of it, the radio PCB has some TV related components, too.

Thanks

She seems to specialize in obscure line systems, like 240, or even lower.
Some are for vertical scanning!

Oh okay! I didn't realise you could get lower than 405 other than Bairds 30 line.

That sound's quite interesting!

Thanks

No, it'll run without the radio PCB. There are 5 wires going to said PCB :

Aerial
Ground
+3.3V power (this comes from the 12V line via a resistor and is clamped to 3.3V by a zener diode on the radio PCB)
AM/FM switching (a DC level from the band switch on the TV PCB)
Audio (into the Sound IF/audio IC on the TV PCB)

I am sure I ran the set with the radio PCB removed when I was investigating it.

Would I not need to keep it for sound from the TV? Or is this also included on the TV PCB?

Thanks

I can only comment on the PCBs that are used in the Nikkai-badged version.

In that set, the TV PCB contains all the audio circuitry for the TV side, including the power amplifier to drive the speaker. You will get TV sound with the TV board alone.

The radio PCB is effectively an AM/FM tuner. It feeds audio into the power amplifier on the TV PCB to drive the speaker. So the radio PCB on its own is not a complete radio. It needs the TV PCB to work.

It's interesting you should say that...

...Aaron, did you ever see the film "Grease"?
the futuristic TV set at Rydell High School is called a Philco Predicta.

I always thought it would be cool to make a copy.

I have seen Grease, quite a few times.

I love the whole range Philco produced (I was more into 50s Americana before I got into UK retro so I've seen these sets many times, I even have some photos of different models on my PC)

That'd be quite an interesting idea to make a copy, I'll keep that in mind!

I don't know how I'd make it though, as I don't think wood would be a suitable CRT housing on this design, and I have no means of shaping metal or plastic.

It's definitely a really cool idea and I've never thought of that! (And probably wouldn't have)

Thanks!
