There were a number of structural issues with the original design. The remaining sites with this design, at Winter Hill and Belmont, have had a number of techniques used to reduce the risk of a further collapse.

While most of these have involved the use of chain dampers inside the structure to reduce oscillations, at Belmont it was found that this was impractical due to the internal fixtures. So an alternative system was developed which involved sealing the tubular structure to allow it to be filled with helium.

So now the stay cables are there to hold the mast down, not up.

It was longer than that, the tunnel was extended in a secret search for the fabled Yellow Submarine, unfortunately the project came to a sticky end when the tunneling crew intercepted the main lode at the Knotty Ash Jam Butty Mine rumour has it the crew were spread all over the place

I remember it coming down, I believe there was a film about its reconstruction, in fact I'm sure there was. Wasn't a colour test film was it?

Unless there was a major disaster over night (and I wasn't called!), there are most definitely two!

It much depends where you were looking from. At a distance, and certain directions, the temporary mast is all but invisible! I lose sight of the temporary mast even as close as the Wakefield/Dewsbury junction of the M1!

Yes just looked out of the back window and there are definitely two towers.

Default Emley Moor Masts

Having read loads of interesting posts about the masts at Emley Moor I thought I'd post this photo taken on a lockdown drive around the area. Noting how much higher the temporary mast is I wondered if any of the network of relay stations could have been shut down during the renovations?

Not in the Todmorden area. Still can't receive signals direct from Emley Moor so I have to make do with Freeview "Lite" (supplemented by TV via the internet). Most people in this town use satellite dishes for TV - Freesat presumably as they are unhappy with the second-rate service provided by terrestrial Freeview relays.

I think that might be an illusion - Wikipedia (not necessarily correct) has the temporary mast as being shorter. From here (Hebden Bridge) the mast tops look to be at a similar height. Besides everyone would need to turn their aerials and re-tune so a bit of a non-starter!

The two main relays, Idle and Keighley are fed via a fibre optic link from Emley so would be unaffected by any breaks in off air signals.

We're 12miles, literally line of sight, from Emley and the temporary mast looks taller -just.

There is an actual difference in the height of the masts at the moment because of the ongoing work on the top (aerial) part of the permanent tower. However, this does not wholly explain the very large discrepanency apparent in David's photo which has more to do with human perception than anything else.

The attached brainless camera image illustrates the point. When we look at the lamp posts our clever little brains 'know' that the posts are likely to be the same height and interpret the flat image accordingly even though the posts nearer to the viewing point are actually much longer. However, when we look further into what we 'know' is the distance the situation becomes much less clear with the towers especially as they have different physical attributes. In David's picture this becomes even more confusing as it looks like the two towers are much closer together than they really are.

When viewed in 3D by human eyes/brain from afar (about 15 miles in my case) the two towers looked to be the same height, as stated by Wikipedia, before work started on dismantling the permanent tower's top section.

As part of an RF Safety course we went up the tower, climbed up through what was then the stand-by antenna (below the main antenna) and poked a Nardalert on a stick through the hatch into the main antenna. I was amazed it didn't alert until it was through the open hatch. Says a lot for the antenna directivity. Nardalerts were routinely worn when working on antenna support structures to warn you of excessive RF fields. They didn't always alarm close to antennas, I have had alerts well below any antennas which I presume are some sort of resonant points in a steel structure itself?

Here's a nice video of one of my ex-colleagues describing the tower...

I've been there!

In the 1980's l was a G8 on two metres and four of us Manchester lads formed a Tuesday net which quickly turned into a drinking club. We travelled to Camra pubs throughout the North.

One night there was only me and Mike, who was a BBC transmission engineer, so he drove me up to the Tower and blagged me in!

The lift is an open frame. Imagine a phonebox being hauled up the side of an 800 foot ladder! To make it worse, it was a rack and pinion lift and halfway up a couple of the teeth were dodgy so that the lift shuddered and felt like it was going to drop!

The view from the top was incredible. Mike pointed at a church in the distance.
"See that church with a roof thats half new and half old? That's where we'd land if the tower fell over!"

"fxxx me!" said I, "That's miles away!"

He then proceeded to show me how, by leaning forward and putting your head on the glass, you could look down and see the Base of the tower, as the windows are canted inwards at the bottom.

Happy days!
Looking at the videos available on YouTube it is apparent that my memory has been playing tricks with me!

The windows are NOT canted, which makes me think that the flaring of the structure enabled me to see the base of the tower.

To be honest, it made my stomach turn!

This was taken on the roof of the observation deck years ago. Me with the untimely capture, and three colleagues. Film, so no multiple takes then.
