Re: Thorn Ultra Model 6054 Record Player
Sorry Graham, I don't.
To the OP. With the deck unplugged from mains, set your meter to the lowest ohms setting. Put the red probe on the brown on one side of the switch, and the black probe on brown on the other side. Write down the reading. Then repeat for the blue side. We will wait with bated breath

Hi Ben, this is all new to me so forgive me but do I plug the deck in before I attach the probes ?

Re: Thorn Ultra Model 6054 Record Player
As Ben noted, the above test must be carried out with the player unplugged from the mains. It's purpose is to check whether or not the on/off switch is working. With the switch in the 'on' position, a short-circuit (i.e. zero ohms) reading should be obtained between the two brown wires, and ditto between the two blue wires. With the switch in the off position, the reading should be open-circuit. It would also be a good idea to check for continuity between the 'L & 'N' pins of the mains plug and the on/off switch

Re: Thorn Ultra Model 6054 Record Player
I would also suggest checking the plug fuse and the internal fuse for continuity.

Re: Thorn Ultra Model 6054 Record Player
Told you that I was a novice. I assume I’m checking continuity. When I turn my multimeter to the relevant setting it is showing ‘1’ on the display. When i touch the probes into the brown connections at the switch the numbers fluctuate for both brown and blue at around 80 with the switch in the on position.

Re: Thorn Ultra Model 6054 Record Player
What range is your meter set to? It should be set to the lowest ohms or resistance range. The leads should be plugged into the correct sockets. Any socket labelled 'A' or amps is for measuring current, which is not what you want to do. The displayed '1' indicates an open circuit. The 80 will have to be multiplied by whatever range the meter is set to.
If it's 80 ohms then the switch contacts aren't making very good contact, but they're not open circuit. With mains applied this resistance is generally broken down and the switch conducts. With the switch OFF is open circuit shown? Have you checked the fuses? A picture of your meter or telling us its type will help.

Re: Thorn Ultra Model 6054 Record Player
Ok so, the multimeter manual says when checking continuity to set the meter to the ‘spesker’ Symbol. This shows ‘1’ in the display as per photo. With test re-run the multimeter is beeping at 001 on brown and beeping at below 30 on blue with switch in the On position. It doesn’t change from ‘1’ when in the Off position.

Re: Thorn Ultra Model 6054 Record Player
Try again with the meter set to 200 ohms, just to the left of the speaker symbol. That will give a value in ohms.

Re: Thorn Ultra Model 6054 Record Player
I think the only way your going to be able to post a video here is to zip it up.
It would be easier just to tell us what the readings are with the switch on and off. Four readings in all.

Re: Thorn Ultra Model 6054 Record Player
Ok, so the readings when the switch is in the off position are unchanged from the display which shows ‘1’ for both blue and brown. When switch is in the On position the readings are a fluctuating 3.4 average on the blue and a fluctuating average of approx 54 on the brown....the readings fluctuate dependant on where you place the probe ie on the actual soldered connection or on the two protuberances at the top of the rectangle switch casing...pic attached.

The test on the fuse in the player is fluctuating around 10.

Re: Thorn Ultra Model 6054 Record Player
This suggests that the switch contacts are, at best, resistive, no doubt due to the age of the control. An application of Servisol 10 contact cleaner, plus repeated operation of the switch may cure the trouble, if not, either dismantling the pot. and cleaning the contacts, or replacing the complete volume control are the options. Ideally the switch contacts should, as I noted earlier, read short-circuit, in the 'On' position. Similarly a good fuse should read zero ohms (short circuit).

Re: Thorn Ultra Model 6054 Record Player
It doesn't look like this switch is ganged with any pot or volume control.
Has the OP checked the fuse in the mains plug? It's best not to overlook the obvious. John. If you want to prove continuity from the mains plug to the switch try this:- Meter of 200R range. Contact one lead to the live pin of the mains plug and the other lead to the neutral lead of the mains plug. It doesn't matter which way round. Now short-circuit (join with a piece of bare wire) the blue and brown wires at various points in the circuit. For example on the fuse board and on both sides of the switch (switch on). In each case the reading should drop from infinity to a low reading.

Re: Thorn Ultra Model 6054 Record Player
The fuse in the mains plug has a reading of 2.0 when the meter is set to 200 Ohms.
