Default VE301 w Volksempfanger poor performance ( even for one of these )

Ok I bought yet another VE301 I have it up and running but I can only tune talk sport ( transmitter five miles away ) everything else I'm getting a whistle I turn down the reaction and just as it's about to tune it cuts it out. Longwave is worse than medium wave as per usual. I've recapped it the resistors were all within tolerance. One other thing with these the 4uf and 2uf caps on the diagram are they better off being electrolytics or not ? On my VE301wn they are but on the standard 301 they're all in a big tin with a 4 a 2 two 0.1 and a 1 would polarised caps be making a difference ??

I've restuffed the capacitor block in two of these sets using electrolytics and haven't had any problems. You have to be careful with the polarity though.

I use about 60 feet of wire for an aerial and the set's signal earth is derived via the three core mains lead.

Maybe just a case of a longer aerial then. The 301WN picks up a hell of a more but despite the looks is a completely different set
