We have two old radios, dirty but seem to be intact. They may have worked when they were put into storage many years ago, but I don't know know.
I know almost nothing about such things but I know that even trying to power them is a really bad idea, so they have not been plugged in to power. One is a Pye T.19.D with a rather woodworm eaten case but appear to have spare/extra valves tucked inside the case. The other is bakelite and I think is a JVC but I don't see a model number. They deserve a chance to continue in some form so we would much rather these go to someone who could use or enjoy them even for parts instead of the skip. They are free, collection only in north Oxfordshire near Bicester. Robin. |

Hi Robin
Are you able to attach some photos to help people see in more detail? The JVC is not going to be a valve set - it will be some other brand and may spark some interest being bakelite. I doubt I can take these on, but I know there's a few members nearby. Whatever you do, don't skip them ![]() Martin

Robin contacted me initially, via BVWS. His email included photos which are attached here. He is a first-time poster here so may not be familiar with photo attachment.

Good detective work Jerry!
The Pye would be good for spares only IMHO but the Graves may well be viable to restore. Both have obviously been damp for decades though. I will save them rather than see them dumped, Robin, but please give priority to anyone closer or keener to have them! Last edited by Nickthedentist; 24th Mar 2023 at 5:59 pm. |

I agree with Nick. The wormies have certainly got stuck into the Pye, but it's probably a viable restoration with a fair bit of work, or somebody could use it as a practice set to learn the ropes (it's a standard 4+R design).
The Graves is a rare and interesting set, and well worth saving. |

I'd definitely be interested in the Graves set and can collect. If there's a hat can I be put in please?
Thanks, Peter

Hello,
Jeremy is correct I am a first time poster, and have very rarely used any forums so I am unfamiliar with most aspects. Every time I do something I am not sure I have done it correctly! This is the first time since starting this thread that I have looked at it and discover a conversation already. Thank you for your interest. I agree no skips. I have just read a message from marconi_pete and wondered how on earth he figured out it is a JG Graves radio from my post, now I know ![]() As he has thrown his virtual hat in the ring I have said we would be delighted for him to collect it and restore it. Thank you Jeremy for sharing the pictures. We would love to know more about the radio and Graves if someone could point us in the direction information. The radios probably belonged to my wifes grandparents or great grandparents depending on the age of the radios. Woodworm have indeed had a high old time with the Pye, but even then the case is still sound and the workings from my very limited knowledge look like they are intact. If other pictures are helpful I am happy to provide them. |

So if John George Graves born Lincolnshire moved to Sheffield started the UK's "first mail order business" was selling a wide range of goods mostly made by other companies and as became quite usual goods were "re-branded" by the retailer, I suspect including this radio, then who made it?

I think Graves had their own factory in Sheffield, though it's true that this example has a distinctly American appearance, and the lack of LW coverage is odd.

I had years ago 2 radios that looked almost the same .one was unbranded and the other made by Derwent . They both had major issues and been got at so I passed them on. Andy

Hopefully the Graves has found a new home.
The Pye hasn't yet but it needs to, anyone interested? |

The graves is a rebranded raymond electric f17. I've worked on a few.
They're generally quite straightforward. I think the JG graves has one of the nicest dials in radio history, which is fitting for a jewellers. Thank God they ditched the Raymond logo... Derwent also used the same chassis in some of their models. They're all LW, MW, SW models |

Hi Robin I'm giving the Pye some thought. I'm looking for an output transformer for a Pye P96F, and the output stage circuit of your T19D looks very similar, with a humbucking section on the primary winding. It could just be the same transformer, despite using an older EL33 output valve. I will do a bit of research on this and get back to you asap. Mike |
