Re: Sony Icf pro 80 freq fault
Well done! Had a Grundig portable like this recently, IF transformer behaved like that. Luckily I had a close replacement lying about, but it drove me round in circles.

Re: Sony Icf pro 80 freq fault
I have exactly the same fault but it came on suddenly after the set was left on for a prolonged period. FM reception is now + or - 150kHz either side the proper frequency. Where do I get a replacement L15 from? Are they fairly standard?

Re: Sony Icf pro 80 freq fault
I used an if transformer from a scrap radio .
Needs to be a transistor radio with subminiature if transformers . If you keep an eye on ebay for small non working 1960/1970s radios With any luck there will be a pic of the components so you should be able to judge if it will fit your radio .They are less common than the standard if transformers Cheers Pete |

Re: Sony Icf pro 80 freq fault
Sorry forgot to say check r60 and c60 first which are across the coil
Your new transformer might well have its tuning cap inside the can so you will have to disconnect c 60 |

Re: Sony Icf pro 80 freq fault
Thanks for that thought. I've probably binned a few old transistors in the past with sub miniature IFT's.
In this case it was the sudden shift, and not gradual drift in frequency, that is making me think of component failure. Thanks, Tim |

Re: Sony Icf pro 80 freq fault
Hello everyone, i see many knowledgeable people on this forum so please allow me to post a question relevant to this topic:
My Pro80 stops at the correct frequency during FM scanning, however i always need to add +50kHz to have undistorted audio. Is this something fixable, or do i need to live with it? I would greatly appreciate any advice. Thanks Nick |

You can find its service manual here if you dont have it: https://www.doctsf.com/sony-icf-pro-80/f27260 Given the complexity of this receiver, I would not attempt to correct this. |

SONY ICF-PRO80 Frequency shift/fault
At the moment i’m so happy that i found this (Sony Icf pro 80 freq fault) relatively new thread that nearly described the same "behavior" that i have - and so many good answers from experts too
SONY ICF-PRO 80 (Completley recapped except C310) Radiostation at 88,8 activity LED goes on, very low noise, when i tuned up or down approx. 200kHz i geht relativly good reception.. AM Wide/Narror reception is possible in nearly the same quality that another Radio it does (KW 7000 - 10000@AM-W/N and LW 147@SSB). Narrow FM, i´m not completley sure about, either i have no activity/reception here or nearly the same problem as Wide FM. Have try with the Converter at 140 MHz with an Amateur Radio and have extremely bad reception if i tune UP/DOWN it's a little better. I test L15 with a continuity from approximately 1kOhm, so i have to decide to desolder it, i dont know if it was glued on or it was capaciator liquid underneth, have try with as little heat as possible, this was not good, the contacts were ripped of, so i need definitely a new one.... Now.... i test again without L15 (for Fun) an the reception performance to my astonishmentare was the same, in that condition i didn't expect any reception on FM Wide?! Is this a good or bad news? Either L15 was complete broken or the problem is somewhere else?! I haven't done any adjustemnts yet because at the moment i have not the complete equipment with the right specification for that (I'm not a professional electronics engineer, i know mostly what the components do, but qualified troubleshooting on this device is a hole new level for me) But i want fix this device with the most beautifull industrial design ever! Thank you in advance for helpful answers! Last edited by Station X; 21st Feb 2024 at 10:32 pm. Reason: Threads merged. |

Re: SONY ICF-PRO80 Frequency shift/fault
It is very complicated, nearly impossible to get a replacement for L15 (10,7MHz IF Transformer)
Has anybody experience to replace this component with a static Ceramic Filter like that: SFECF10M7FA00 "SFECF10M7 series for FM receivers are small, high-performance and super thin (1.4mm max.) filters." https://www.murata.com/en-eu/product...ECF10M7FA00-R0 https://www.digikey.de/htmldatasheet...seet.html#pf17 What would the expert say could it work? |
