Default Hacker Gondolier capacitor

Hi - new member here.

I'm servicing a Hacker Gondolier and noticed that the machine I have has a 0.001uF capacitor across the output transformer. This doesn't appear on the schematic, and I haven't seen it in the various posts/YouTube videos I've come across.

Can anyone tell me what this capacitor is for?

I think I came across this once and seem to remember it was because someone had replaced the original amp with one from a Cavalier.

Or does the empty socket mounting hole suggest it was from a SERENADE (RG16) ?

Ahha - I should learn to check carefully - the machine is in fact a Cavalier!

Is a capacitor like this worth changing? It looks like the grid coupling capacitors have already been replaced, so my original plan was just to change the electrolytics and a couple of resistors that are out of tolerance...

I would regard any supermold capacitors with suspicion.

If the capacitor is across the O/P TX primary, its leaky or S/C failure wouldn't damage anything though it would affect the output sound to a greater or lesser extent. Worth replacing though and stay with the high voltage rating. Transients from record scratches or noisy pots etc. can develop seriously high peak voltages across the O/P TX primary!

On the Hacker Cavalier schematic (on radiomuseum) identified as G.P.15, it does not show the capacitor across T2 primary.

However on the right hand side Issues column, there is a note saying R17 6.8K and C14 .001 added in series across prim T2, then a later note saying R17 & C14 deleted across O/P trans prim. Plus other notes.

David

Edit Update - The capacitor is shown in photo on radiomuseum.

Thanks for the help - both here and elsewhere on this forum. I’m pleased to say the Cavalier now has new capacitors and is working very nicely!
