Help identify car radio model
Good evening all
This set i believe is from an E-Type Jaguar. Can anyone help identify which model it is. There also appears to be a problem on the power supply. Many thanks Dave |

Re: Help identify car radio model
I think I have one of those somewhere, I seem to remember it was a Philips. Came out of a 1963 MkII.
I'll try and look it out and see if I can glean any more information. |

I think it could also be a Radiomobile, not sure.

Re: Help identify car radio model
Motorola? It has some similarity appearance wise to the 818.

Re: Help identify car radio model
The red W looks like an upside down Motorola logo.
Is the set from a US market model? I would have expected a UK spec set to have had LW not just MW. Looks like that Mullard mustard in the power in filter has been scorched by overheating RF chokes- dead output transistor?

Re: Help identify car radio model
I think it's quite likely to be a Radiomobile/HMV as they were favoured by Jaguar around that time. Possibly a 500T or similar variant.

Re: Help identify car radio model
I might retreat from my Philips suggestion - the Philips radio I was thinking about had a separate power amplifier section with something like an OC16, the radio section was 12 volt valves. I think I am getting mixed up with the radio I had in a 1966 S type, I may still have that somewhere though it was faulty. Bit like my memory in fact, though your radio is definitely familiar.

Re: Help identify car radio model
Looks far more like the Motorola from a quick image search.
Likely a 515T or 616T depending on whether SE or P-P output- these are MW only versions of the 717T / 818T.

Re: Help identify car radio model
It's a Motorola, someone gave me one years ago, same design with distinctive knobs and tuning dial shape but badged Motorola instead of Jaguar. Unfortunately I passed it on...

Re: Help identify car radio model
Can't do a decent Motorola 818 pic. (ref. Post#4) that doesn't break forum rules without doing a load more trawling.....
But here's a Motorola 808 that looks the same as the 818: https://www.radiomuseum.org/r/motogb_808t.html EDIT: Post crossed. Lawrence. Last edited by ms660; 11th Jan 2021 at 11:01 pm. |

Re: Help identify car radio model
Pretty conclusive. Interesting point about the lack of long wave. That and the fact that Motorola was (is?) based in Chicago does suggest an imported vehicle. I suppose Jaguars were always popular in the US.

Re: Help identify car radio model
The Radiomobile/Motorola puzzle highlighted in this thread could be explained by the close relationship that developed in the 1960s between Smiths and Motorola. Smiths, whose valve car radio technology originated with EMI, didn’t then have their own transistor circuit design capability, so partnered in the U.K. with Motorola. The first Radiomobile transistor radios were in fact Motorola designs. More information in this thread https://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/...d.php?t=142875 .
The Radiomobile production line made sets some branded Motorola and some branded Radiomobile. The example in this thread looks as though the Motorola badge was fixed upside down! I’m sure that some sets would have been MW only for the US market and marketed through Motorola. And, by the way, is that a Cyldon tuner that we’re seeing in this example? Martin

Re: Help identify car radio model
To me it looks much more like the Motorola 808/818T highlighted earlier in the thread. One way to clarify would be to compare the actual circuit to the available service information but bear in mind the lack of long wave.
Martin (Post #13) has provided the answers regarding the relationship between Motorola and Radiomobile. Alan |

Re: Help identify car radio model
The fact that the tuning scale is in kilocycles rather than metres suggests to me that it was not a UK market set, backed up by the lack of LW as already noted.

Re: Help identify car radio model
I thought Radiomobile sets were designed by HMV/EMI and were often sold badged as HMV in Australia and other countries.

Re: Help identify car radio model
In 1945 EMI and Smiths Motor Accessories Ltd established a new company named 'S Smith and Sons Radiomobile Ltd' to manufacture car radios. Radiomobile radios were often branded HMV which was already part of EMI when the new company was formed. The sets were made at the Smith's factory but I don't know precisely who was involved in the design process.

Re: Help identify car radio model
I'm sure I had a Smiths Radiomobile radio that looked very much like the pic and it had long wave but I have a feeling that only one pushbutton selected the 1500m "Light Programme". Pretuned at the factory perhaps - didn't want us to listen to them furrin' stations.
Hasn't the OP's pic got the Motorola symbol in the centre?
