The lubricant going sticky is the cause of the overheating resistor. I've never had to change one and I've serviced loads of them

Likewise, I have refurbished 5 of these decks, changed the capacitors on them all (all Rifa, all blown) but never had to replace a resistor.

Agreed. The resistor runs fairly cool when it's feeding a nice free motor. A slight smell and you know what to expect.
