Re: AVO Multimeter survey
Thanks; point taken.
My AVO has only the part-number on the scale plate (out of visibility below-centre): 5270-455 Ch.6 8mk. A sticker on the side (next to what I take to be the date) reads: 1046 M90219, then beneath: MRTS/3. These numbers are also evident inside the battery compartment. HTH

Re: AVO Multimeter survey
From Holland,
Yesterday I received a second hand AVOMETER 40 serial on the side of the case: 05242 40/2/76, a young one I guess. I had a bad resistor, 30 ohms instead of 15 ohms for the 1000 ohm range. Soldered in a new one, it worked perfect! Succes furtheron! |

Re: AVO Multimeter survey
I am in the possession of two (small) AVO meters. The first one (the oldest) is an AVO Minor, probably from before WW II. It bears the serial number 10755-34.
The second one dates back to the '60s. It is an AVO Multiminor. It does not bear a serial number on the scale (as far as I have been able to see). However, I did find a number on the inside, molded into the back of the plastic front: 40628/3. I am not sure that is the serial number though, it might just be a part number. The oldest one, the AVO Minor, does not have a switch, just a number of sockets you can plug the leads into. The second one does have a round switch knob. Unfortunately, neither of the two seems to function anymore (the bearing of the needle perhaps?). I do not know whether they can be repaired. If you are interested I can send you some foto's. |

Re: AVO Multimeter survey
I've just bought my first multimeter. It's an AVO Model 8 Mark 5. Pt. No. 5270-455Ch. 5 8 mk. 5. It's got 8V/2/76 on the side, so it was made February 76 . It also says 96691 on the side.
It came with the original probes and an almost immaculate case. The meter itself is in very good condition aside from the fact that the +ve battery terminal has a bit of corrosion on it. It's lost its coating. The previous owner has obviously scratched some of the corrosion off and exposed a bronze colour underneath. |

Re: AVO Multimeter survey
I have here a slightly mangled testset No. 1 (6625-99-105-7050) with the serial No. 4211 on the left hand of the scale. sadly the front panel is damaged but it has not affected the accuracy.

Re: AVO Multimeter survey
Regarding the UNIVERSAL AVOMINOR that I've mentioned in another thread, the serial number is U.72009.1144.
Is it possible to date it from that? |

Re: AVO Multimeter survey
I have here a UNIVERSAL AVOMETER MODEL 9 Mk II (so it says on the back panel). On the front it has 9sx stamped between the two main controls. The meter scale has the serial number 3xxx-1S-562.
It has the top removable cover for the batteries, and ranges which run in 3 - 10 - 30 - 100 etc. Three resistance ranges, 3000V DC and AC terminals, reverse meter button and cut-out. It does not have the outer metal case or a leather case. I seem to recall buying this in a surplus sale back in the early 1990's. Was working last time I used it (early 1990's?) :-} Sadly it's not my favourite piece of test equipment. Give me a Fluke 77 anyday. |

Re: AVO Multimeter survey
I have just aquired my first AVO-a model 7 mark 2. It is in great shape cosmetically and seems to work perfectly. Tye school I teach in was about to throw it out (I have worked there 10 years and I never knew it existed) but I claimed it along with the leads and instruction book . The batteries were still inside a sticker on the outside showed it was last calibrated in 1968. the number is 4110-A-962.
