Re: Gould 1604 plotter
Open the lid where the paper goes.
Press the "pen change" button. (the pen carrier should move to the right). Pull the lever marked "eject" (this should flip up the end of the the topmost pen). Fit a new pen. Repeatedly pressing the "pen change" button will index the carrier so you can change all four pens. |

Re: Gould 1604 plotter
There is no reference to any pens are indication of where the pens are. I am thinking there must be something missing as there is no indication of any printing mechanism. I've removed all the covers and the print unit but still can't see any signs of pens. In the earlier machines did they use the same type of priint similar to the early pc printers which used a spark on the paper to print?
I've attached some photos. |

Re: Gould 1604 plotter
I found a very low resolution picture showing the inside of the plotter on the web, I take it yours looks different to this?
Or could it be an updated version with a thermal printer? David |

Re: Gould 1604 plotter
My work 1624 (just a 1604 with differential inputs add-on), uses a thermal printer. It looks just like the one in your 1604.

Re: Gould 1604 plotter
Thanks for all your help, I'mjust in the process of replacing the elect. capacitors in the osciloscope but I'm thinking it must be a thermal printer like you say.

Re: Gould 1604 plotter
I'm sure they just unclip from the drum. I don't remember how to rotate it to the next colour though.

Re: Gould 1604 plotter
You need to have the printer powered on, lift the lid and then press the blue "change pen" button. This will bring the carriage into the change position and you can use the tab to lift the top pen. Once you've changed that, the "change pen" button selects the next pen and you repeat.
There's a place in Germany where you can buy new pens. If you need it, I'll find the address for you.

Re: Gould 1604 plotter
Thanks but there is no change pen button or visible carriage. I think now that it is a thermal printer as described earlier by dazzlevision!

Re: Gould 1604 plotter
The Gould 1600 manual says:
4-color Plotter for 1602 + 1604 are option The 1620 series has a thermal printer But the interface is very simple and Gould made later a Firmware update, so I think it's possible to exchange printer vs plotter. Your device looks like a thermal printer (only one head) You can also check the paper, if its a thermal paper. -- Peter |

These were miniature felt-tip pens supplied in a tube. I remember you could index round the pen holder and change them one at a time. If you can post the address of the pen supplier ... They may be able to supply the pens I need. Here's hoping ! Thanks, if you can. John |

Re: Gould 1604 plotter
Back in June 2016 I posted this:
If, like me, you've searched high & low for replacement pens for the plotters used in Gould 'scopes (and other old equipment), look no more. These fit perfectly: http://www.lass-shop.de/epages/63686...US%20017.01%22 They will ship to England and they do speak a little English, but a web order will work.

Re: Gould 1604 plotter
Re: Gould 1602/04
I've just obtained a 1602 as well as my 1604 but it had very bad focus issues so I changed the 10uF caps on the power supply, as mentioned in a previous posting, and the results were very good. I switched off the 1602 and carried on changing the caps on the 1604. Later I switched on the 1602 and got nothing just as though a fuse had blown. I tested the mains fuse and also the two on the power supply board and all were OK. It states in the repair manual that there is a fast blow fuse on the rear panel but I can't find one. Any help would be appreciated. |

Re: Gould 1604 plotter
I got mine from one of the on-line stationery suppliers. Just search for the proper width.

Re: Gould 1604 plotter
Thanks but I have some now. I'm now waiting for information in English about the pens. I have contacted the recommended supplier but it seems they have a minimum order price which is just about £1 over the price of a set of pens. I don't want to buy two sets of pens so I'm waiting for a guide as to what will make the price up to the minimum

Re: Gould 1604 plotter
The 1604 plotter isn't a thermal printer. It uses plain paper rolls. Well, mine does anyway - I don't know of a thermal colour printer.
