Could you restuff them? Getting the end caps off might be the hard bit.

Shouldn't be too difficult to drill through axially if the caps won't budge with some gentle heating. A 2mm hole should do to slip in a modern axial resistor and a couple of blobs of solder will close the holes up and connect the resistor to the caps.

Should be pretty much invisible when done.

Thread title changed from Carley to Varley which seems to be what's written on the resistor.

To get a clean fix, every reply needs its title editing individually which can be a lot of work (and risk of subsequent errors) if a thread grows a lot before it gets noticed.

It would be a good help if we all double-checked titles before hitting 'submit'

The title is what steers people to your thread, hopefully including the one who has the answer to your problems, so a simple typo could prevent this.

Great as this all is I only wanted to know what to stuff them with ?? By which I mean will the type of resistor make any difference to the performance of the set.

Radio wrangler I'm aware that for some reason it auto corrected to Carley but editing a title using this site on an Android phone is next to impossible I did try.

If you know it's wrong, please click the report post triangle and let the mods know. It'll give us a head start on the replies so there are fewer to do. Believe me, it's appreciated!

Auto-spell is a right nuisance.

I think that one is a glass tube with end caps cemented on. If you can get one cap off without breaking the glass, you should be able to get a modern resistor in with its leads poking out the end - drill the end cap if needed, and solder.

I like to use decent metal film resistors. They are very stable, minimal noise and good linearity. Should be good for at least another century.

I wonder if heat would get the ends off ready for re stuffing?

Heat, yes, this makes the shellac wood pulp stuff go gooey. A days soak in meths works too but may fog the paper label inside. I wouldn't bother with any glue at all when fixed, the resistor is in a spring clamp and not in a shop for selling. Those where the days when a resistor was the equivalent of a few pounds (UK currency), they had to look pretty.

I know the one in the picture is just a 'stock' example and not one of the actual resistors, but are they all actually open circuit? I'd be asking whether the meter was set on the correct range for testing them before going any further.
