General Electric - BC3045 - UK Vintage Radio Repair and Restoration Discussion Forum

Hi,

Does anyone have any information on this set - General Electric, GECoPhone Instrument number BC 3045?

I attach a picture. The owner would like it working, but I cannot find any information about it and all 4 valves are missing. Plus, it looks like the original batteries would have had several voltages.

Does anyone have one?

First thing to check is the various intervalve transformers and the moving iron speaker coil. The battery acid fumes play havoc with suitcase radios and they are often open-circuit from green spot disease.

Thanks for the advise. However, I don't think I will be doing anything with this set unless I can find out what valves it will eventually need! Otherwise it is just a nice display piece.

Is it the one linked to above? Some pictures would help but it looks like the 1930 version of the Screen Grid Four. Check the transformers first as valves will be easy to work out and there are still plenty about.

What is that big wound plate on the battery cover for?

I have a similar set and the plate is the rotator (turntable) so you can turn the set around for best reception.

Like on the bottom of Roberts sets

You take off the cover and sit the set on top

Interesting about the plate - certainly that makes sense as it is not anything electrical.

Yes - it is the same as the one in the pictures. Sorry, but I have a problem with my camera at the moment. I will explore the item further and see what the transformers are, check them etc, and hopefully take some internal photos.
