I remember that caused a number of ructions in the pages of RadComic and a couple of other mags of the era.

I remember it (after a couple of minutes into the programme) as a very good drama, a bit too sad for me to watch again. I liked CH4 in the early years, quirky and edgy, all channels these days are too formulaic. Another good one was "Fools on the Hill" about Ally Pally TV in 1936.

I recall us watching this at the time. I don't think we were particularly impressed, it all seemed a bit cheap and limp. My main gripe was the very unconvincing rotating antenna shots!

Didn't see that program, but do remember an article (not sure which magazine, may have even been a post in these forums) about the model that was built showing those few houses and the antenna.

One good sneeze and that antenna would have been miles away if it had been real.

Another good Channel 4 dramatisation was "Sputniks, Bleeps and Mr Perry", see part 1 here:-

Lol. I must watch that...my surname.

I did a QRZ.com check in the callsigns usedbin CQ and one is shows as belonging to the sailor, Terry and the other not to a character but to Michael Elphik. I haven't yet worked out how that can be. Did the authority simply not issue those calls I wonder, or issue them to the TV company. Anyone know? Perhaps Elphik really is an amateur.

Sadly, Elphik died young at 56 and I think that QRZ.com entry is just for info, there's nothing I could see in a Google search about him being licensed.

I can think of other instances in books and films where plausible callsigns appear but were probably never issued. Although it must be 50 years since I read it, Hammond Innes's "Atlantic Fury" has GM3CMX as part of the plot, a late 40s or early 50s callsign.

First time I have seen this.
No doubt inspired by the real-life adventures of Thor Heyerdahl LI2B, the Kon-Tiki raft expedition (1947) and the Papyrus reed raft "Ra II" (1969-70)

Does anyone remember listening or working him?

I thought it might be more inspired by Donald Crowhurst.

I think you are correct.
That certainly fits the deep philosophical monologues.

The Donald Crowhurst story was very tragic. The video of him setting off on his ill-fated voyage shows him wearing a collar and tie, which I always thought was weird. But then when they found the mummified body of George Mallory high up on Everest, he too was wearing a collar and tie. Wouldn't contemplate making the final push to the summit without the old tie, eh?
Sorry if this is rather off-topic.

The Donald Crowhurst story was made into a film called "The Mercy" with Colin Firth in the title role.

Anyone remember "The Bug" featuring Bob Monkhouse as a radio amateur?

There's an extract in the BBC4 Monkhouse "Secret Life" Doc Graham but I didn't see it when Transmitted [1967 apparently]. I presume that Bob kept a complete copy in his own archive but it's not anywhere else [of course].

He was apparently transmitting HF on a VHF aerial if the one on the roof is to be believed. Good film though and mostly accurate.

My first HF rig was an FT101ZD and my CW isn't much better than that now and I bet he didn't spend as long learning it as I did.
