Default FT-243 Crystal Socket Hint

If an FT-243 crystal socket is not available, an octal socket may be used instead.

With the socket wired as shown, the crystal may be plugged in any which way and still be in circuit.

You can actually get two FT-243's in an Octal socket. I did this in a simple one-valve Tx about 45 years ago, so I could switch between two preset frequencies. I pinched the idea from an unrelated constructional article in a 1960's ARRL handbook.
