Hi Ben,
I not at home currently, but as soon as I get back later today I'll take some voltage measurements and let you know.

Cheers
Rich.

Are these the measurements you were asking about Ben?

I'm not much good with a multimeter.

Cheers
Rich.

The first picture 31v would suggest there is the s/c I mentioned , but then the third pic shows 17v, no idea why this might be. Where's the black probe connected to?

The black probe was through a hole on the metal chassis of the vcr. There are three wires on the head motor/capstan motor connector block, I just put the red probe on each of the connector block pins. The 17v is what's going into the capstan motor, the 31v is what's seems to be going into the head motor, I'm guessing the middle wire is ground?

Rich.

Ah-ha.

Ben, it was that transistor you mentioned at fault! I swapped it for one from a scrap machine and Hey Presto.

I do need to get hold of a replacement Head Servo Module though as the one originally in this VCR is defective. I've swapped it for a good module from my other working VCR for the time being just so I can fully test it.

Thank you Ben for pointing me in the right direction, and to all who replied, it's much appreciated.

Regards
Rich.

Thanks, Ben.
After testing some more it kept shutting down, so I looked in the service manual and found that the other transistor needed changing. Changed that and no more shutting down. I wonder what will be next. Haha.

Cheers
Rich.

I wonder if the motor is drawing too much current, possibly slightly sticky?

It all seems ok now (fingers crossed). I played one of the tapes that was originally recorded on it from the late 1970s in the modified speed and it ran for 6 hours non stop. Next job is to clean all of the heavy nicotine staining off it internally and try to get hold of the A/V out modification.

Cheers
Rich.
