Roberts R717
Hi,
I've just got two of these radios, one black, one grey. One is completely dead, the other appears to work fine but the ferrite rod aerial has dropped out of its holders and is hanging loose. Basically I need to dismantle both of them to get to the innards. I've removed the handles and their fixings, plus the aerials, and can't see anything else holding the innards in the cases. Are they glued together, do I have to force them apart? Any suggestions gratefully received! David |

Re: Roberts R717
I don't know the R717 specifically. but would be almost certain there's no gluing needing to be overcome. What does happen with related models is that the chassis fits very snugly indeed in the cabinet and can stick to the vinyl covering at the top, so a little easing by brute force can be required to free it to come out: probably best at this point though to wait and see whether anyone with experience of the 717 can confirm that there aren't any specific hidden fixings.

Re: Roberts R717
Paul is spot on. Once the side screws holding the handle and the aerial screw are taken out then in theory the chassis should come out of the top of the case. Trouble is muck settles in the gap over the years and the vinyl becomes welded to the plastic sides of the top fascia. I had one that was stuck so badly that I had to use a craft knife in between the 2 surfaces to free it. Have a look here. https://youtu.be/C55QU0XKRdM. I think it’s pretty much the same chassis.
Good luck Graham |

Re: Roberts R717
Thanks for that info and the video was useful. Same apparent problem as one of my sets!
I started with the set with grey vinyl trim and the vinyl was as stated "welded" to the sides of the top. I had to cut down both sides to free it off. The second set with black vinyl trim just came apart without any hassle. Looking at the two vinyls the black appears to be much thinner than the grey which may have some bearing on why it didn't stick. My initial thought that the black set was dead, was actually not the case. Using earphones revealed that the rf was working fine but the audio was only just audible. Further checks needed! David |

Re: Roberts R717
Switch cleaner in the band selectors and the headphone socket first .
I've not done a 717 yet, but I am guessing there will be only IC's in this set.

Re: Roberts R717
Thanks for that, I'll give it a go.
There are two ics and a single transistor; TA 7358AP (FM front end) and TA8117 (FM IF strip and AM radio with amplifier). A pdf is easily found for the former but I can't find anything for the latter although a TA8100 could be similar? |

Re: Roberts R717
I suspect the culprit will be the TA8117N. Have a look at this video I did on the RP28 https://youtu.be/2f4zGbBiTao. That uses some of the same circuitry. I couldn’t find any info on it either but did manage to find a replacement.

Re: Roberts R717
I think you're correct there Graham. I may just keep this one for spares now.
Best regards everyone, David |

Re: Roberts R717
It's a fair bet that the app circuit in that datasheet will fit the radio, too.

Re: Roberts R717
Wow! Thanks for that, I've searched and searched unsuccessfully for that! I now need to go back to the radio unfortunately I'm away until the weekend.
Cheers, David |

Well found Peter. I also searched high and low for that.
Thanks Graham |
