Default Magneto Phones

When I was in a small town museum in New Zealand I saw an interesting collection of old phones. Many of them had magneto handles on the side, including some fairly modern looking phones. I asked the museum staff about these and apparently some areas of NZ relied on the magneto system right up to the mid '70s. I wonder if magneto phones are still used in some parts of the world?

I also believe they are still used in extremely remote places in Africa etc, i have no source for this so it could have been a dream.
