Default 1920s/1930s visual "Arrow" beacon system.

Not sure if this is really appropriate for the forum [mods feel free to delete if you see fit] but I found this:

which was a late-1920s/early-1930s visual version of the radio-beacon network, used for the US Mail planes.

Some of the hilltop visual-beacon sites in turn became locations for radio-navigation beacons, and for HF voice/CW aircraft radio installations.
