Default Micro Alloy Transistors?

In another thread there is a link to a copy of Practical Wireless from December 1963. In the advertisement pages, there is a double-pager from Sinclair offering several of his little goodies and there’s a reference to M.A.T. Micro-Alloy Transistors which are claimed to offer “Extremely high power gain at all levels of collector current and voltages, and at frequencies from a.f. To 100 mc/s”

I wondered what these were about?

If you put 'Micro Alloy Transistors' into Google, a lot of information comes up, including a previous thread on here!

I seem to remember that Micro Alloy Transistors were offered by Philco and may have been developed by that firm. They were gold coloured devices. I can across them in a transistor radio tuner with FM I repaired. I think it was one of those GEC sets with unusual rounded ends.

I've found it - the GEC BC562.

Yes good old Clive

http://www.wylie.org.uk/technology/s...ics/Semics.htm

There is a persisting belief that Clives MAT transistors were just remarked Plessey out of spec devices.

Cheers

Is it a false memory or do I remember either Practical Wireless or Radio Constructor giving a free MAT device with the magazine? I think the supporting article was some kind of headphone amplifier that could be powered with just 1.5Volt.

MAT121 I seem to remember.

I've always believed that all of Clive's transistors were drop outs from somewhere or another, Plessey and Ferranti I thought.

Maybe these are real ones? If so, it must be rather annoying. They say burglars are most upset by being banged-up for the one they didn't commit.

Didn't Plessey make them under licence from Philco for a time?

When I was a youth in Sheffield there must have been a PW article requiring a MAT101 transistor, which I duly purchased from Bardwells. Probably 1964-5. Here it is! I recall whatever it was I built never worked, and looking at the curves it's not surprising!
