Default Mullard High Speed Valve Tester - which mark?

Hello

I'm just getting round to checking out the Mullard High Speed Valve Tester I rashly paid £20 for at RWB in July. Does anyone know which mark number it is?

Photos attached. Does the 3041/542 serial number mean that it's a E7600/3?

The valve line-up is: 85A2, 6X5GT, EL37 (missing), EF50, FW4/500, ECC35, EZ35.

best regards ... Stef

Hi, Stef,

That looks like the Mk 1 from the valve line-up, although I don't know where the 6X5GT comes in. The tester only uses 2 rectifier valves; the FW4-500 (replaced in later machines by the GZ33) and the EZ35.

The Mk 1 chrome handles on the top would have 90 degree bends in. The Mk3 had a 30 degree slope at the front of the handles and the Mk 4 had semi-elliptical handles. There was no Mk 2 as such.

The later variant of the Mk1 had a resettable cutout button to protect the machine; the original Mk1 didn't - most were subsequently modified to incorporate it, since the mods made the test set more user-friendly.

Sad that THAT valve is missing. Search on Ebay and be prepared to be horrified.

Cheers,

Frank

Apart from the services version (CT80) there were 3 versions of the Mullard HSVT. E7600, E7600/3 & E7600/4, AFAIK there was no Mark 2.

My Mark 4 actually says E7600/4 on the ID plate. It seems logical that a Mark 3 would have E7600/3 on the ID plate.

This further supports Franks assertion that your machine is a Mark 1.

Thanks Colin and Frank, that's very useful.

I'll look for documentation and a source for the EL37.

Best rgds. Stef.

Hi Stef, as the EL37 is used as a series regulator you may well get away with one of the (slightly) cheaper equivalents such as the 6L6.

The setting up details are given in the HSVT thread on this forum.

Thanks Ed. Yes I noticed that the 6L6 is often shown as being close to the EL37. I have a few 6L6s (stored for a valve amp project), so I probably don't need to buy one.

I'm having trouble finding a manual and schematic for my Mk 1 HSVT. There are plenty of scans around for the later versions, but do you know where there's a Mk 1 version?

best regards ... Stef

Here is the circuit for the E7600, E7600/3, E7600/4 & CT80. I have the manual for the E7600 too but it is to big to post. PM me with your email address and I'll send it to you.

I believe I got my Mullard HSVT service info from GMB's web site but the link to it here no longer works.

Looks like the EL37 is triode connected anyway, not that power triodes are any less £££. A parallel strapped 6080 might do but an EL34 would probably go straight in. 6L6 is a bit lower power so might struggle with larger types on test.

807 would likely work with obvious base and top cap mods.
