Leclanche Cell manufacture
If anyone fancies having a go at manufacturing a Leclanche cell, like the one shown in the pic below, then it's worth knowing that Aldi sell jam in jars of a very similar square shape with a round neck, approximately 4" tall x 2 1/2" square.

Re: Leclanche Cell manufacture
Haven't a clue! You'd have to use something 'modern' and hide it in the glass jar.

Russell,
It aught to be possible to get an unglazed, biscuit fired, pot. Who goes to Pottery classes? Alan |

Re: Leclanche Cell manufacture
You may need to get clever with a blowtorch to form the notch in the circular top for the zinc rod to stand neatly......
Or you could try this (Indian) outfit: http://www.racexports.com/detail.php?code=1221585347150 There's a picture including the PP here: http://racexports.trustpass.alibaba....nche_Cell.html

Re: Leclanche Cell manufacture
Graham,
Possibly. You'd have to 'bung up' - can't think of a better word - the hole in the bottom. I'll have a look next time I'm in the Garden Centre. The next two problems would be supplies of manganese dioxide and ammonium chloride. Carbon rods and zinc sheet should be fairly straightforward. Alan |

Re: Leclanche Cell manufacture
I have an old Leclanche wet cell, found in a disused attic some years ago. It was empty. I got the ammonium chloride by opening dud dry cells and dissolving them in water until it was saturated, forming crystals. The porous pot is cracked, possibly as a result of freezing, but it seems to work OK
