Default Patriotic Bush DAC90!

Hello,
I pulled this Bush DAC90 off the tip this morning and is without doubt the worst example I have ever seen. It must have been 'modified' during the 'I'm Backing Britain' period around 1967. It has the familiar sticky label giving the waveband changes so must have worked until relatively recent times. The EBC33 is missing and the EF39 is gassed, not a problem as I have many of these valves.
Strange but I don't have a DAC90 in my collection. Just about everything else including many 90A's but not a 90! If anyone has a spare cabinet and a back going for a fair price I will have a go at restoring it. The chassis looks quite clean considering the state of the rest of it. I wonder if the guy painted the roof of his Austin Mini the same.....?
Regards, John.

Hello John

I thought I'd seen some sorry looking sets, but that DAC90 is something else!

Whoever painted the case must be very patriotic and it must have taken quite some time to achieve. But for heaven's sake why?

At least the chassis looks in a good restorable condition, and well worth you spending some time and effort on. Hope someone comes up with a donor case and dial glass to offer you.

Good luck with it!

Not quite as nice as Brian's radio here, John: https://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/...ght=itv+series, but I bet his cost a bit more than yours

I bet the fatal cabinet/glass damage was done at the tip

Nick.

Dont scrap the cabinet yet John. My own Austin Mini has been rebuilt from a far worse state than that. If you dont find a new cabinet, I'll buy the poor thing off you and test my newly-acquired paint stripping and body repair skills on it. Steve.

Ps, this guy knows no fear with bakelite

I'm laughing...165 views. I knew that would get you all going. The only have to mention a DAC90!
Steve, If I don't find a cabinet you can have it FOC. It has a good CY31, CL33 and CCH35, its only the easy ones you will need to find. Lets give it a few days and see what happens. Regards, John.

Hi John, Is the AC91 cabinet the same as a DAC90?

I retired this AC91 cabinet to the garage, earlier this year, because of the crack on the top right. The speaker cloth (plastic) should be there too.

You can have it, if you want it, for the price of postage (and if I can find it )

Regards
David

I can find you a tuning scale that has a very minor bit of the green paint rubbed away, but it's serviceable and isn't broken. Combined with the cabinet that David has there, that would address the cosmetics. I can't spare a back cover though. The actual painting doesn't look too crudely applied, but I think it would suit a round Ekco rather better! *Avoids flying knives...*

We'll get this one into Success Stories yet!

Before we burn the previous owner in effigy I think it is not unreasonable to assume this was just seen as 'an old radio'. A DAC90 is not exactly super rare is it?
However.... I still have to wonder why the paint job was preferable to the beautiful natural bakelite. No accounting for taste is there?

I'm with the original owner - I think it must have looked excellent when first done. What a great idea. And don't forget this treatment probably saved it from the tip for many more years.
I've seen a red (well)sprayed one with white knobs - it looked STUNNING.
Don't forget there were some 250,000 of these made. what's bad about a little originality ?
I'm reaching for the spray can as I write.... Andy

PS anyone got a cracked type 3 IVORY set they want to sell

Black? I wish my DAC90s were black, they're both the boring mottled ones, same as my 90As, but these sets all have their individual patterns so I can just about tell them apart.

I remember seeing a green one on the forum not so long ago, and others have appeared all over the web these last few years in colours of which some were tasteful, but the Union Flag theme makes the thing look a bit like a souvenir hat from a seaside resort.

Possibly it was painted to hide an earlier repair? Maybe in about 1952 or 1977?

hello Dave and John,
That is very kind of you to offer me the Bush parts. The AC91 cabinet will be just the job and John if Dave wishes to keep his scale I would like to take you up on your offer. This is not going to be a 'precision' restoration job and a few odd bits will be great! I will PM you both with details. Regards, John.
