Stereo Ferrograph
Would this play tapes recorded on 4 track mono machines?

Re: Stereo Ferrograph
It looks like a 1/2 track recorder and so would not replay 1/4 track recorded tapes well at all - you would have a combination of two tracks off your tapes with one of them being backwards.
However, the Ferrograph's model number should confirm this suspicion. |

Re: Stereo Ferrograph
Looking at the heads it seems to be a 1/2 track machine, but the switches allow selection of upper track, lower track or stereo - so it probably does record and play stereo but using the full width of the tape. I haven't seem a Ferrograph with this feature before, it's more common on studio equipment.
The model number would help to determine the specification.

Re: Stereo Ferrograph
Looks to be a model 422, which is half track stereo - the model 424 would do quarter track stereo (4 track).

Re: Stereo Ferrograph
Yes, it's a 422 alright - the earlier version with Series 4-type capstan.
The 422 is a very interesting machine, as the playback head socket has a feature that, if you replace the FP14 1/2 track stereo head with an FP28 1/4 track one, you can play either 1/4 or 1/2 track tapes with correct track alignment by very slightly raising and lowering head height with the lever behind the head. As it is now, you'll probably find that lever locked in place (the manual describes how to make the change). But getting the FP28 head is the problem... If you're playing 1/4 mono tapes, it would just be a question of selecting upper or lower output socket as required - the switch in the picture only relates to the record function. There's a scan of the manual here: https://www.audioservicemanuals.com/...-owners-manual

Re: Stereo Ferrograph
Thanks for the info, looks like not so useful for myself, lot of yapes were 4 track mono, had a few ferrographs over the years, but not a stereo one.
