Default Regentone Tape Recorder

Hi Guys,

This was given to me, needs a bit of a clean and lubricating inside, mechanically sound. Does anyone know much about it? There’s no model number..

Looks like something of continental origin, maybe late 'fifties - can we have a view of the connector panel and perhaps below decks?

Looks rather like an EM34-style magic eye. I wonder when these stopped being used mainstream in favour of side-view types.

That's a Saja MK4 - made in West-Berlin around 1957 by the firm of Sander & Janzen. I've never before seen one rebranded though.

I've got one of those in its original branding in a lovely red colored case, like this one:

The magic eye is an EM71, also used by Grundig and Tandberg machines of that vintage. Tandberg used them on all the 'yellow' and 'brown' top decked machines, going to the compact EAM86 at the start of the 1960s when the model 6 appeared. Grundig seemed to have switched to the EM84 even earlier than that, it's only the earliest Grundigs up to the TK819 and TK830 which use the EM71. I personally like the look of it. It's got a large, warm and friendly feel to it.

It's a nice, albeit basic, machine, with a maximum reel size of 6". The large holes in the bottom for ventilation without any grille would not pass any modern day safety inspection though.

On mine, if it's been standing still for a while, I need to rotate the motor slightly to get it to start, but after the initial push it runs fine. It doesn't feel like the oil has gummed up, it's quite free to move, so a bit of a mystery.

That fits well - Regentone, like so many other UK concerns, went over to BSR decks when they arrived about 1960.
