Re: Missing Sets?
Yes - Malc's right. Most BRC colour sets had the red button - the 8000 was to proclaim that the LOP transistor had failed, usually. Best forgotten ...

Re: Missing Sets?
Hi Steve
Yes - that was the famous 17" 3717 introduced in late 1971 - the first 'under £200 set' produced that wasn't a portable. It looked dated even then! It had a rubbish unipotential tube in it that always went a greeny-blue with brick-coloured reds - I think it might have been a Toshiba. The 8000A had a proper tube in it! The 8000 has its fans, but it was a basic set - mechanical tuner, thyristor PSU hidden in the depths that cooked, awkward line output transistor (type and accessibility!) and a bit of a home-made chassis look about it, especially if you were used to the 3000 series. Oh - it had a doubler as well - if anybody needs one I have a couple of NOS ones.... Glyn |

I thought that Decca had a sub-£200 colour set on the market about this time? ianj

Re: Missing Sets?
I seem to remember a thread that Marcus3500 had about his. It included some pictures too but I can't seem to find the thread. I'm sure I didn't dream it

It's also a properly engineered product made with high quality componets and fitted with an excellent tube that can produce really first class results. You can't say any of that about the BRC8000! |

Re: Missing Sets?
How about the strange little hybrid Teleton with the funny valves? Quite a decent picture and very reliable. Forgettory has swallowed the model number - I seem to think it had touch tuning using 7400 TTL chips?

Re: Missing Sets?
Go to Mikey405's site for a picture. The set is a VX1110 and the set had the 10 Pin Valves - the one you have probably heard of is PFL200. The valves were quite difficult to get hold of, but not impossible. They were quite reliable valve wise, but like every other set, go for Capacitors.
Cheers, Steve P.

Re: Missing Sets?
Steve
You're right about the VX1110, but I'd call a PFL200 a "normal" valve. It was things like the 3AT2 EHT reccy and its pals I was referring to. Lee (Hunts smoothing bomb) has/had one of these sets: as in Post #9 here.

Re: Missing Sets?
Just wanted to say a belated thank you to Malc, Mike and especially Glyn for identifying the Ferguson 3717. I never knew there was an HMV version too. I suspect both versions must surely be extinct by by now, but does anyone have any brochure shots!
These sub-20" early 70s colour sets make for an interesting topic. I'd forgotten about the little Decca model and didn't Pye do a little hybrid 18" set too around the time of the CT205 and indeed sharing the same 6 button tuner? I have a 1973 brochure which includes the Invicta version of it (on legs!) - probably about the last year the Invicta named was used appeared.... Steve J |

I think that last sentence should read ' probably about the last year the Invicta name was used' ...
and I have touched a drop (yet)! Steve |

Re: Missing Sets?
And after a quick delve in the leaflet drawer, some illustrations of a few oddities...
Photos show what I assume is the Alba TC2417 which must be a version of the Ferguson 3717 alluded to earlier, then the Invicta 7018 18" colour set (1974), the Ekco CT818 18" (nice legs!), Ekco's 1972 'Leap Ahead Year' TV promotion including the CT253 in trendy white... or CT252 in black.Steve |

Re: Missing Sets?
No one would shed a tear if that Invicta disappeared for ever. Containing - I suspect the Pye 713 chassis.
I suppose the whip is a handy accessory - just right for caning the beast!! Simon T.

Re: Missing Sets?
That Alba set looks very much like a set we rented for some years, if I remember right. A new tube was fitted after a while since the old one was flaring badly and the picture with the new CRT was fantastic. Visitors often commented on the excellent quality!

Re: Missing Sets?
Oh how we miss the CT200 series....don't we??
I'll bet it was a simulated picture as they never produced a viewable one... I think these sub-£200 sets came after the 8000 in late '71, so I think the claim was justified! Dragging the thread kicking and screaming back on-topic, I know there weren't so many of the early seventies European hybrids imported (as opposed to the big names), but I quite liked the Skantic/Luxor (with the odd PC92 and three colour difference EF184valves), the Saba hybrid (weighed a ton but very reliable) and even the Kuba Florence! But the most common I havent seen for a long while is the good old Korting hybrid. Took ages to warm up due to the heater thermistor but a great picture and reliable as well. Anyone got one? And am I imagining things but (challenge time) was there a hybrid set which used RGB drive with THREE PL802s? Just me, then.... Glyn |
