Default Blinging up a 706!

How well do black 706's polish up if the starting condition is as typical from normal use?
Also, did all 706's have the metal trims around the receiver buttons?

The later 706s (1968 onwards?) had plastic carry handles combined with plastic escutcheons around the dial plungers. They were also devoid of the letter / number ring around the dial, and had a clear plastic dial, a la 746, with the numbers on the 'antique silvered' plate directly behind the holes. The 'Ericsson' PAX 706s had a nice chrome carry handle and combined escutcheons! Rejected by the GPO: too expensive.

The early 706s were made from Diakon - a perspexy type stuff - and these ones polish up best. They were made from ABS after about 1961, which fades in sunlight. Fading can be brought round by the 'Retrobright' process or submnerging the case in an 'Oxy action' solution in sunlight for a day or so.

It's all on Bob's telephone page, here.

Having Googled it, Diakon is apparently an acylic, specifically PMMA (polymethylmethacrylate), the same stuff false teeth are made of!

So, very durable and takes a polish very well.

I remember a GPO publicity film showing lines of women buffing up 700-series phone covers on large wheels
