I've seen quite a few home-made TV receivers, and they were one of a kind, too. So they were the equal rarest on the planet

My first TV was made from a number of commercial bits plus an American radar display. It worked well, but the high persistence of the tube made for a ghostly picture!

Could well be. The unit was an aircraft mounted one with two tubes, one for height and the other for azimuth. Used magnetic deflection. As a show-off, I had both tubes displaying the picture. I remember watching the very first Dr. Who on it!
