Default Faulty Kenwood R 1000

I have recently been given a Kenwood R1000 and it has a most peculiar fault.

On connecting the power lead the receiver's display shows a figure 5 and after a few seconds, the 5 becomes a 0.

Switching the set on and pressing any of the buttons or controls does nothing. The receiver does not work and the display remains on zero.

Should I suspect the MSM5524 has gone faulty.

Does the MSM5524 control the operation of the receiver?

If it is the IC, does anyone know where I can source one?

Thanks Roger ZS2RD

One in stock at Jotrin, just Google it.

Hope this helps and welcome to the forum.

Yes I have one aswell which has been well messed about with! Been looking for replacement aswell, but there was a work round on a previous thread that I posted with regards to a You tube video on the subject but its not clear still as yet as to why so many parts were removed just to replace the display etc, but it appears to have been successful apparently! Meanwhile sorting out a number of issue with one I have, great shame brilliant radios but this has been hacked something rotten!!

Is the IC purely for the display or is it part of the receivers circuitry as the receiver is totally dead as the on off switch does nothing to either rthe display or the dead receiver?

When the radio is switched on, the lights on the meter and the kHz tuning display illuminate.

I have also checked all voltages out of the PSU board on connector 12 and all voltages are present and correct.

This unit really has me puzzled as there are very few test points that I can see.

I do have the service manual for the unit.

These receiver's will work even if the MSM5524 has been removed. Time to get the signal generator out.

Here's how I replaced the chip in mine:-

There was an article in the Radio & Electronics World where they compared the FRG7700 with the Trio R1000. They covered parts of the circuitry that may be useful, I found them on the American WorldRadioHistory site.

Pages 48 to 53.

For info on the Phase Locked Loops and frequency display see:-

Pages 76 to 81.

Superb information on these receivers and have followed up with downloads and prints as I have an FRG7700 and R-1000 both with display issues and some very helpful refreshes on PLL operations and synthesis as an aside too.
