Default OTT-813 etc

Not sure if this is the right place to post this link but I thought that this guys projects were truly OTT. Made me think about building a 3 valve TRF with 813s and a 30W class A audio O/P Wow!!

It just demonstrates what I've always believed: electronics enthusiasts are an incredibly creative collection of people!

Wow! All of his projects look amazing! They are extremely well built and so elegant to look at. Puts my few cobbled together creations to shame.

What's the performance like using that monster valve in a regenerative circuit?

Well if the valve in that regen RX is used at it's full rating, and is allowed to oscillate, it could probably black out a whole county's receivers acting like a transmitter I reckon!

Umm,

I think it's hideous ! But looks well built, the mahogany woodwork in particular is nicely done

His 'Crystal Lighthouse' is a much prettier piece and probably worth its $250 price tag.

Not to worry. If someone actually tried that, it would hardly work at all as a receiver. In a regenerative receiver one of the important tricks is to run the detector at *low* power to get the best performance.

Secondarily, I would know of a few pieces of wood, which would catch alight if the 813 ran all out.

I have heard about a number of these types of projects over time, and most people with some experience with regenerative receivers says these 'monster contraptions' are more show than go. Haven't actually tried making one myself tough, so I have no opinion on the matter.

Whilst on the Topic of 813 amplifiers, here is how to do it properly . . . .

Hi, I don't know about doing it properly, I suppose if I wanted 1500W on 11m it would be an option I guess. The only HF Tx experience I had was with a 2-30 MHz broadband 150 watt driver stage that used 12 4CX250s as a distributed load amplifier. I thought that the smoothing cap mounting in the pics was quite nifty and I may use a similar arrangement on my stereo 813 PP audio amp. I'm still trying to sort out the 10V 20A DC heater supply after picking up a 12V 300VA tranny. I found an interesting cct based on an LM78xx and a bunch of 2N2955s.
Cheers,
Mike.
