Re: Ferguson videostar 3v32 drum speed problem.
Hi, yes it is. Recordings made on this and played back on another vcr are fine with no white lines at all. All tapes played on this vcr have the lines.
Cheers Richard. |

Re: Ferguson videostar 3v32 drum speed problem.
can you take a picture of the area from the drum to the pre amp board behind it Richard? it's been many years since I looked at one ( mine!) but I might spot something

Richard
Well done at solving the drum speed issue. A little odd that the connector had failed. As for these white flashes, it looks like a grounding issue. Have you made sure the drum is grounded properly? There should be a springy grounding clip at the top of the drum and it sometimes gets oxidized. Fivos |

Thanks Fivos.
I've cleaned the earthing clip and the cap, not much dirt came off it. Tony, I've attached pictures of the drum area. Cheers Richard. |

Re: Ferguson videostar 3v32 drum speed problem.
Hi Tony,
I have tried it, and the pre amp too but with no success unfortunately. Could the power supply board cause it by any chance? I noticed a burning smell, a little blueish flash and a fuse blown, caused by my stupidity when taking the power supply board out to inspect it for dry joints etc, I connected one 3 pin connector to the wrong lead. I replaced the blown fuse, but it still worked. D'oh!!! Last edited by Snarf81; 31st Oct 2019 at 8:51 pm. Reason: Corrected a spelling mistake. |

Ah, thanks for this! I did actually check them whilst I had the drum out the other day, they were fine.
Thanks Richard. |

Re: Ferguson videostar 3v32 drum speed problem.
Did you check both halves of the rotary transformer ?
I believe Vauxfan ^^^ had a similar problem with a different Fergy machine a while back, but as I say I have never seen the rotary transformer winding problem on any Fergy VS machine myself. Edit: thread on Vauxfans problem here: https://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/...d.php?t=155260

Re: Ferguson videostar 3v32 drum speed problem.
Hi Red,
I did check both as I'd had the loose winding problem with one of my Sanyo betamax vcrs in the past so I always check now after that. Thanks for the suggestion though Richard. |

Re: Ferguson videostar 3v32 drum speed problem.
No probs, it wasn't my fault report
I added the link to Vauxfans problem in my previous post. A suggestion of mine is to try a temporary 'hard' ground connection with a piece of wire from the psu ground direct to the deck/head amp can/head Earthing brush, to see if you have a "grounding" problem elsewhere it has been known on other machines.

Re: Ferguson videostar 3v32 drum speed problem.
Ah, I'd never thought of that. Good suggestion. I shall do that tomorrow as I've given up fiddling with vcrs for today, tomorrow I'm taking delivery of a Philips N1500 VCR so I'll be in the mood to take the lid off this Ferguson yet again. Haha.
Thanks again Richard. |

Re: Ferguson videostar 3v32 drum speed problem.
good luck with it Richard. I don't think the power supply is the problem as it looks a bit too good but it may be worth checking the voltages going into the pre amp

Re: Ferguson videostar 3v32 drum speed problem.
It looks like the classic 'static build up' problem to me, I have had a faulty earthing brush before today and I could not find anything wrong with it either.
A short thick piece of wire soldered to the secondary PSU chassis/0V line temporarily connected to various points one at a time in the order as I posted above eventually found the culprit though. Another instance was the deck earthing on a Toshiba machine (which Tosh later made a mod kit available for) was found by pretty much the same method. Whilst this may not fix Richards problem it is quick, easy to do and costs nothing to try and may well rule some things in or out as the case may be, be interested to see what transpires all the same.
