Looking back at Vauxfan's posts he said the drum took off, I'm going for the feedback loop.

Thanks for the reply, Tony.

I think I'm going to have to send this vcr off to someone that has a scope to check these things out for me. It's probably something very simple that I can't diagnose as I don't have the appropriate test equipment

I just remembered, I have a spare FG head from my scrap ITT version. I shall try to replace it and see what happens.

I've just replaced the FG pick-up head assembly and the problem is still there.

Edit;
I've traced the fault to the connector on the video head motor, when I put pressure on the connector the drum slows down to the correct speed. Frigging thing! I've just got to work out how to get the drum assembly out of the machine to check for dry joint on the connector, or a crack in the PCB.

it comes out in one lump. disconnect the connector at the bottom and remove the static strip above the head & the 4 screws holding the drum assy to the chassis. you will have to check all the poles, a/c head & servo settings as per the manual once you have put the drum back in

there should be another connector up top going to the pre amp board as well, can't remember exactly where, it's been many years since I swapped one!

Thanks Tony!

I changed that connector board for the head motor. It's all running at the correct speed now, but I have some white lines on the screen now. It looks like tape has a damage line on it, but I've checked the tape and it hasn't. It's like it on all the ones I've checked so far. I've cleaned the tape path and video head drum but it's made no difference. Darn this vcr!

is the static discharge bar on the top of the head fitted? it's a piece of sprung metal which is fixed by a screw at one side with a grey lead going down to the chassis

Hi Tony,
Yes it is fitted and I've made sure it has good tension to the cap on top of the head.

I think there should be a shield over the head amp - is that in place?

Hi, yes, all is back in place as it should be. It's very odd!

it is indeed, it doesn't look like a tape path issue to me. have you tried putting the large shield back on over the top?

Hi,
It's all been put back together again and it's away from any other electrical device, apart from the TV of course. Hehe. I'm using it on a CRT TV, not a plasma, so I'm not getting interference from that, I don't think I am anyway. I've moved the VCR as far away from the tv as possible and put it up close but those queer white lines don't get any better or worse.

That was on standard play. I'll have to get back to you tomorrow about long play as I've disconnected it and turned it off at the mains for the evening.

I'll make an LP recording tomorrow and let you know the results.

Thanks for the suggestion,
Regards
Richard.

I've made an LP recording and those white line flashes are now on the lower half of the screen. I've attached some pictures of the lines.

Thanks Tony. Aye, that's the main thing sorted. I've just got to work out what's causing the white lines.

it still looks like static but odd that for SP its at the top of the screen and LP is the lower part. each head pair are independent for SP & LP. have you compared the grounding & screening to your scrap set?

also check the static strap for the graphite pad that contacts to the head drum, they can drop off

other than that check the FM waveform for dropouts

I agree, it's very much like static.
I don't have the equipment to check the FM waveform unfortunately. It'll have to go to someone who's geared up for repairs I think.
