Hi all!
I would like to ask for some help. I have no knowledge on this. I bought a rotary vintage phone in the UK and it was working there. I am now brought it to Spain and it is not ringing here. It gives tone and the voice can be heard perfectly when picked up, but the bell does not ring. Could anyone please advise? Thanks! |

It's probably not got the ringing wire connected to anything. See https://www.epanorama.net/circuits/uk_wiring.html

This looks to be a normal Telephone 746. There is the necessary bell capacitor in the telephone -- it's C1 on the PCB (green block on the right). Try disconnecting the external wire from terminal T6 and linking T6 to T7. Leave the connection between T6 and T5 and the resistor between T5 and T4

Note where the two ends of the bell coils connect to. One of them will connect to the white line wire. The other one will connect (possibly via a 3.3k? resistor) to the blue line wire. You need to add a 470nF, 400V capacitor between the red line wire and the bell coil (bypassing the resistor if present).
Ordinarily a 1.8 or 2µF capacitor would be used, but the smaller value will let enough current through for just one phone.

I will agree with Julie M, strap the resistor, and a capacitor 1/2-1 uF between T7 and T9 will probably solve it. The Spanish system did use 25Hz ringing, but may have changed to 50 Hz. that may give just a buzz in the ringer until it is tuned for 50 Hz.

There already is a capacitor between T7 and T9. Look at diagram N846. You just need to connect T7 to T6.

Thanks for the responses.
I tried removing the wire to T6 and connecting T6 and T7 , and it didn't work.. Then I tried connecting the wire back to T6 and then linking T6 and T7 but it didn't work. I do not have any resister or capacitor so I will update once I have bought them. |

Hi,
I have added a resister 3.3k and a capacitor 047uf 400v between T7 and T9. Is that correct? Please see at the photo. It it still not ringing :-( |

For the benefit of anyone in a similar situation who might find this thread in an Internet search in future, what did you have to do in the end to get it to ring?

By my opinion, this forum, and the https://www.classicrotaryphones.com/forum are the 2 best places to search and find solutions for such problems. For English phones, this is "the one only" at least after the master-socket was introduced.
